Chapter 4 - THE SHARK IN THE WATER

Arthur Sterling did not walk into rooms; he invaded them. As the most feared corporate litigator and divorce attorney in New York, his reputation preceded him like a thunderclap. Dressed in a bespoke navy suit that probably cost more than most cars, he sat across from Elena in her living room, reviewing the printed spreadsheets with the detached intensity of a forensic pathologist examining a corpse.
"He’s sloppy," Arthur finally announced, tossing the papers onto the glass coffee table. "The shell company in the Caymans is registered under an anagram of his mother's maiden name. It’s the kind of amateur financial maneuvering I’d expect from a crypto-bro, not a VP of Acquisitions."
Elena sipped her herbal tea, her expression unreadable. "Sloppy enough to secure a conviction?"
"Oh, absolutely," Arthur smiled, revealing perfectly white, predatory teeth. "Federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and breach of fiduciary duty. We could send him to prison for a decade. But a criminal trial takes time. You want him bled dry before the handcuffs click, don't you?"
"I want him to lose everything," Elena stated, her voice devoid of any warmth. "I want him to wake up one morning and realize the life he thought he had stolen has vanished. I want him ruined, Arthur."
Arthur leaned forward, interlacing his fingers. "Then we need to talk about the prenuptial agreement. When you married him, your father insisted on an ironclad prenup. Ryan signed away any right to your familial wealth in the event of a divorce. But there is a loophole he might try to exploit."
Elena frowned. "What loophole?"
"The 'Mental Incompetency' clause," Arthur explained, his tone serious. "If Ryan can prove to a judge that you are mentally unfit to manage your assets—say, due to severe postpartum depression or extreme emotional instability during your third trimester—he could petition for emergency conservatorship. With his proxy votes, he could control your shares until you are deemed 'fit'."
Martha gasped, dropping her teacup with a clatter. "He wouldn't dare. That's monstrous."
"He just watched his mistress shove his seven-month pregnant wife onto the asphalt and didn't lift a finger to help her," Elena said quietly, the memory sending a fresh wave of adrenaline through her veins. "There is no bottom to his depravity. He absolutely will try."
"Exactly," Arthur agreed. "Which is why we are going to lay a trap. We cannot let him know that you know about the embezzlement. You need to play the part of the devastated, heartbroken wife. You need to let him think he still has the upper hand."
Elena closed her eyes. The thought of looking at Ryan, of pretending to still care for the man who had plotted her destruction, made her physically nauseous. But as the baby kicked sharply against her ribs—a fierce, internal reminder of exactly what she was fighting for—she opened her eyes. They were cold, clear, and unyielding.
"What do you need me to do?" she asked.

"Tomorrow night is the annual charity gala for the real estate board," Arthur said, pulling a sleek tablet from his briefcase. "Ryan will undoubtedly try to make an appearance to maintain his image. He might even bring Vanessa to establish a public narrative that your marriage has been over for months. I need you to go to that gala. And I need you to be spectacular."
Elena understood perfectly. The battlefield was being drawn, and the first shot would be fired under the glittering chandeliers of high society.
