Chapter 5 - THE GLAMOUR OF DECEIT

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of black tuxedos, glittering diamonds, and the suffocating perfume of old money. This was the epicenter of New York’s real estate elite, a place where multi-million dollar deals were sealed over glasses of vintage champagne. For Ryan, tonight was supposed to be his coronation. He had planned to circulate, whisper rumors of his impending divorce due to Elena’s "hormonal instability," and solidify his alliances before executing his corporate coup.

He stood near the ice sculpture, nursing a scotch, a mask of charming melancholy perfectly fixed on his face. Vanessa stood a few feet away, officially attending as a "corporate guest," wearing a tight emerald gown that screamed of newly acquired wealth. She kept shooting him impatient, hungry looks.

"They're buying it," Ryan whispered to Vanessa as he passed by her to grab another drink. "Old Man Higgins just offered me his sympathies regarding my 'difficult home life'."

Vanessa smirked, running a hand over her own slightly rounded stomach. "Just make sure the proxy votes are secured by Monday. I'm tired of sneaking around in the shadows, Ryan. I want the penthouse."

"You'll get the penthouse," Ryan promised, his eyes scanning the entrance. "Elena is at home crying her eyes out. She’s too fragile to show her face in public after yesterday. We hold all the cards."

At that exact moment, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom swung open, and the ambient chatter of four hundred elite guests died a sudden, spectacular death.

Elena walked in.

She did not look like a broken, fragile wife. She looked like a queen stepping onto a battlefield. She wore a custom, floor-length crimson gown that draped elegantly over her pregnant figure, commanding absolute attention. Her hair was styled in sleek, old-Hollywood waves, and around her neck sat her grandmother's legendary diamond collar—a piece of jewelry only brought out for coronations or funerals.

Martha walked beside her, radiating the terrifying energy of a seasoned general, but it was Elena who owned the room. She glided down the grand staircase, her posture impeccable, a serene, untouchable smile gracing her lips.

Ryan’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor.

"What is she doing here?" Vanessa hissed, her emerald gown suddenly feeling cheap and inadequate as the entire room turned to admire Elena.

"I don't know," Ryan choked out, panic flooding his system. The narrative he had spent the last two hours carefully constructing was crumbling before his eyes.

Elena didn't immediately approach them. Instead, she moved through the crowd with flawless grace, greeting board members, kissing the cheeks of senators, and exchanging warm pleasantries. She was projecting an image of absolute stability, glowing with the radiance of impending motherhood. Every interaction was a strategic strike against Ryan's claim of her "incompetence."

Finally, after keeping him sweating for twenty agonizing minutes, Elena turned her sights on Ryan. She approached him, the sea of guests parting for her.

"Ryan," Elena said, her voice bright and carrying just loudly enough for the surrounding investors to hear. "I was wondering where you wandered off to. You left the penthouse in such a rush this morning."

Ryan swallowed hard, trying to recover his charming facade. "Elena, darling. I... I didn't think you were up for an event tonight. Not after your little... spell yesterday."

Elena let out a musical, dismissive laugh that made him flinch. "A spell? Darling, it was just the summer heat. Dr. Aris assured me the baby is developing perfectly, and I feel absolutely wonderful. In fact, I've never felt more clear-headed."

She stepped closer, dropping her voice to a lethal whisper meant only for him. "Enjoy the champagne, Ryan. Because it's the last thing you'll ever drink on my family's dime."
