Chapter 28 - THE SECRETS OF SAINT JUDE’S

The interior of the old Chevrolet smelled of candle wax, stale coffee, and damp wool. The heater was blasting hot air, rattling behind the dashboard as Father Thomas sped down the winding mountain road, keeping his headlights on low beam to avoid attracting attention from the fire crews and state police cruisers racing in the opposite direction toward the inferno at the Vance estate.

In the back seat, Margaret wrapped Lily in an itchy wool blanket Father Thomas had pulled from the trunk. Lily sat silent, clutching the small silver key that hung from her neck, her emerald eyes staring out the window at the flashing red and blue lights passing them by.

"Arthur is dead, Thomas," Margaret said, her voice hollow, stripped of all emotion by the sheer magnitude of the trauma. "Julian shot him. And then their mercenaries bombed the cellar."

Father Thomas closed his eyes briefly, crossing himself with one trembling hand while keeping the other firmly on the steering wheel. "Arthur knew the risks, Margaret. He spent twenty-five years living as a phantom, trying to gather enough evidence to dismantle his father's syndicate from the inside. He stayed alive for one reason only: to protect Emily, and to protect this child."

"Why Emily?" Margaret demanded, leaning forward between the front bucket seats, her eyes burning into the priest’s profile. "Arthur told me Emily was my granddaughter. The child they stole from me in seventy-four... who was she?"

Father Thomas took a deep, shuddering breath. "Her name was Sarah. Arthur tried to track her for fifteen years. When he finally found her, it was too late—she had died of an illness, leaving behind a sixteen-year-old daughter named Emily. Arthur couldn't reveal himself without bringing the family cartel down upon her, so he watched over Emily from a distance. He arranged for her scholarship, he made sure she was safe. But he never anticipated that Emily would meet Daniel."

"Daniel," Margaret choked out. "My son. Emily was... oh God, Emily was Daniel’s niece?"

"No," Father Thomas said firmly, turning the car down a narrow, unpaved lane marked by a weathered wooden sign that read: *SAINT JUDE’S CHAPEL - NO TRESPASSING*. "Daniel was not your biological son, Margaret."

Margaret felt the breath violently leave her chest. The world seemed to stop spinning. "What did you say?"

"When Arthur’s father stole your infant daughter in nineteen seventy-four, he didn't just take her away," Father Thomas explained, his voice heavy with the sins of a dead generation. "He knew that if you woke up with empty arms and no child, your grief and your family’s suspicions would launch a police investigation that could uncover his operations. So they brought you an abandoned infant boy from an orphanage in upstate New York. They told you your labor had been difficult, but the baby survived. Daniel was never a Vance by blood, Margaret. You raised him as your own, but he had no genetic claim to the Vance trust."

Margaret leaned back against the headrest, staring up at the fabric of the car roof. Her entire life—fifty years of love, of sacrifice, of burying a husband and raising a son—had been an elaborate, cruel theater constructed by a dynasty of sociopaths to keep fifty million dollars in a private trust.

"And Lily?" Margaret whispered, glancing down at the little girl sleeping against her arm.

"Lily is the biological granddaughter of Julian Vance," Father Thomas said as he pulled the car to a stop behind the stone rectory of the chapel. "Emily took her to save her from Julian’s cartel. And in doing so, Emily made Lily the sole legal heir to the entire Vance empire under the original bloodline covenant. That key around her neck doesn't just open a trunk, Margaret. It opens the vault beneath the First Fidelity Bank in Boston. And inside that vault is the ledger that can put seventy powerful men in federal prison for life."
