Chapter 19 - THE CONFESSION IN THE RAIN

The man turned around, surprised by the elderly woman charging him through the downpour like a berserker. But his surprise lasted only a fraction of a second too long.

Margaret didn't hesitate. She swung the flat side of the heavy axe head with all the momentum of her sprint, striking the man square in the ribs.

A sickening *CRACK* echoed over the sound of the rain. The man gasped, the breath driven violently from his lungs, and he collapsed onto his side in the mud, clutching his fractured ribs and groaning in agony.

Lily broke free, lunging into Margaret’s open coat. "Grandma! Grandma!"

"I've got you, baby, I've got you," Margaret panted, pulling the girl tight against her, her lungs burning, her muscles screaming in protest.

She turned to run toward the safety of the main road, but the roar of an engine cut through the storm.

Julian’s black European sedan came tearing around the corner of the house, its headlights blazing through the sheets of rain like two blinding searchlights. The front fender was dented, steam pouring from under the hood where the radiator had taken damage, but it didn't slow down.

The car screeched to a halt ten feet from the barn, blocking their path to the gate.

The driver’s door opened.

Julian stepped out into the mud. Half of his face was blistered red from the boiling steam, his tailored clothes drenched in black fuel oil and rainwater. His eyes were wide, completely unhinged, stripped of all aristocratic dignity. In his hand, he held a spare tire iron.

"Give me the evidence, Margaret," Julian screamed over the gale, his voice cracking with madness. "Give it to me, or I swear to God I will run both of you down into the ditch and burn this whole goddamn valley to the ground!"

"The police are already on their way, Julian!" Margaret yelled back, standing her ground in front of Lily, raising the bloodstained axe in front of her. "I triggered the panic alarm on Daniel’s work truck before I ran out! You have three minutes before the state troopers surround this property!"

Julian froze. He looked toward the driveway, his chest heaving, rain plastering his hair to his burned forehead.

Then, he began to laugh. A high, hysterical, broken laugh.

"You think the police care about Emily?" Julian spit into the mud. "The state attorney general is on my firm’s payroll! Who do you think authorized the falsified autopsy report two years ago? Who do you think ensured that Daniel looked like an abusive, alcoholic monster so nobody would question his word when Emily died?"

Margaret stared at him, horror mingling with the rain on her face. "You set Daniel up from the very beginning."

"Daniel made it easy!" Julian yelled, taking a step forward, raising the tire iron. "He was poor, he was angry, and he couldn't provide for my sister! Emily belonged in the city, managing our family’s portfolio! But she chose him! She chose this dirt, this house, this pathetic little life! She threw away fifty million dollars of family capital for a carpenter and a brat!"

"Mommy chose us," Lily said.

Her voice wasn't loud, but in the sudden lull of the wind, it cut through the rain like a razor.

Julian stopped walking. He looked down at the tiny girl standing beside Margaret in the mud.

Lily stepped out from behind Margaret’s legs. She wasn't crying anymore. Her small, soaked face was set with an ancient, unbreakable resolve.

In her small, mud-caked hand, she wasn't holding the silver key. She was holding a small, black plastic device with a glowing green light—the dictaphone recorder Daniel had taken from the lockbox.

It was turned on. The little red *RECORD* light had been glowing the entire time.

Julian’s eyes dropped to the recorder, then snapped back to Margaret.

"You didn't just record the old tape," Julian whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "You recorded everything I just said."

"Every single word, Julian," Margaret said coldly. "And this device has a direct cloud-sync feature to my attorney’s office in Boston. It uploaded sixty seconds ago."

Julian let out a roar of primal fury and lunged forward with the tire iron raised to crush Margaret’s skull.
