Chapter 26 - THE AMBUSH AT THE CULVERT

Margaret instantly killed the flashlight, plunging them back into murky darkness illuminated only by the faint, bouncing reflection of the halogen light cutting across the mouth of the tunnel.

She pulled Lily against the slimy concrete wall of the pipe, holding her breath until her ribs ached.

Outside the pipe, the low murmur of two men speaking could be heard over the rushing sound of the mountain stream.

"Command says the house is fully neutralized," a voice reported, accompanied by the static click of a walkie-talkie. "Three bodies confirmed in the structure—Julian Vance, an unidentified adult male in the basement, and another mercenary near the barn. But there’s no trace of the old woman or the child."

"They couldn't have gotten far on foot in this storm," a second voice replied, cold and detached. "Sweep the creek bed. If they’re in these drainage culverts, they’ll pop out within half a mile. Orders are shoot on sight. No prisoners. The client wants the bloodline extinguished by dawn."

"Copy that. Moving downstream."

The crunch of tactical boots on wet river rocks grew louder, moving closer to the mouth of their pipe. Margaret pressed her palm flat against Lily’s mouth, her own heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped beast.

She looked around frantically in the dim light. There was nowhere to hide. The pipe was a straight tube. If the mercenary leaned in with his tactical light, they would be illuminated like targets in a shooting gallery.

Then, Margaret’s fingers brushed against something hard protruding from the curved wall of the culvert—an ancient cast-iron overflow valve, heavy and rusted, sitting five feet above the water line. It was designed to relieve pressure during spring floods, held by a loose cotter pin.

Margaret swallowed hard. She leaned down to Lily’s ear, whispering so softly her breath barely stirred the child’s hair. "Lily, crawl behind my skirt. Keep your head under the water level if you have to. Do not move."

The beam of a high-powered weapon light suddenly pierced the mouth of the culvert.

A silhouette appeared at the opening—a heavily armed mercenary, his rifle raised to his shoulder, sweeping the interior of the pipe. The beam raced along the concrete walls, splashing across the black water, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed.

Twenty feet. Fifteen feet. Ten feet.

The light hit Margaret’s muddy boots.

"Found them! In the west drain—" the mercenary shouted, stepping forward into the pipe and leveling his weapon directly at Margaret’s chest.

Margaret didn't scream. With every ounce of strength remaining in her elderly, battered body, she threw her entire weight onto the iron lever of the overflow valve.

The corroded cotter pin snapped like a gunshot.

A massive, held-back wall of trapped mountain runoff—thousands of gallons of mud, deadwood, and freezing silt that had accumulated behind the blocked storm grate during the hurricane—burst through the overflow opening with the fury of a ruptured dam.

A roaring torrent of black water slammed into the tunnel, hitting the mercenary like a freight train.
