Chapter 24 - THE FIRE IN THE RAFTERS

A blinding white flash illuminated the cracks in the ceiling, followed immediately by a deafening roar that blew the cellar door clean off its hinges. A waterfall of liquid fire—chemical thermite burning at four thousand degrees—spilled down the wooden stairs, turning the lumber into a roaring pillar of flame within two seconds.
The heat was instantaneous and suffocating. The air was sucked from Margaret’s lungs, replaced by the toxic stench of burning copper, melted insulation, and scorching stone. Lily screamed, burying her face into Margaret’s neck, the heat singeing the edges of her curls.
"Arthur! The hatch!" Margaret coughed, her throat burning.
Arthur had wedged Margaret’s discarded tire iron into the spokes of the naval wheel. Veins stood out like ropes on his neck as he shoved with all his strength, his boots slipping on the slick mud. With a sickening *CRACK*, the rusted dog-bolts sheared off, and the iron wheel spun freely.
Arthur hauled the heavy iron plate upward. A blast of icy, stagnant air rose from the dark pit beneath them, smelling of wet earth and rotting hemlock.
"Get in! Now!" Arthur roared over the crackling inferno above.
Above them, through the blazing hole where the cellar stairs had been, a man in full black tactical gear peered down, his assault rifle raised. He caught sight of Arthur and opened fire.
*Crack-crack-crack-crack!*
The bullets spattered against the stone floor, ricocheting with angry metallic whines. Arthur returned fire with his sidearm, firing three measured shots upward. The tactical operator jerked backward, his rifle clattering down the burning steps into the coals.
"Maggie, go!" Arthur grabbed Margaret by the shoulder, shoving her toward the opening.
Margaret didn't hesitate. She swung her legs into the dark hole, clutching Lily tightly with one arm while her other hand searched for rungs in the blackness. Her boots found cold steel ladder steps set into the concrete shaft. She scrambled down three rungs, holding Lily against her chest like a shield.
"Arthur, come on!" Margaret yelled upward, squinting through the falling ash and blinding smoke.
Arthur stepped toward the hatch, but as he reached for the lip of the opening, a heavy boot stepped out from the smoke at the top of the ruined foundation wall.
A second mercenary, wielding a high-caliber shotgun, leveled the barrel straight at Arthur’s chest.
"Vance," the mercenary growled through his comm-mask.
Arthur didn't try to raise his pistol. He knew he was half a second too late. Instead, his eyes locked onto Margaret’s terrified gaze down in the darkness of the shaft.
"Take the child to Saint Jude’s Chapel in North Conway, Maggie!" Arthur shouted, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "Ask for Father Thomas! Tell him the Bloodline Clause has been enacted!"
*BOOM.*
The shotgun blast lit up the cellar in a flash of orange fire. Arthur Vance’s body slammed violently against the stone wall, his blood spraying across the foundation before he collapsed across the opening of the hatch, his dead weight partially sealing the metal door above them.

"NO!" Margaret screamed, her voice drowned out by the collapsing floorboards of the kitchen above.
