Chapter 8 - ELENA Elena nearly left the Bennett family.
Daniel understood.
She had watched wealth and power turn people silent.
She had watched Victoria threaten a child in front of guests.
She had seen people look away.
“I don’t know if I belong here anymore,” Elena admitted.
Daniel answered carefully.
“You don’t owe us anything.”
That surprised her.
He continued.
“You protected Lily when everyone else froze.”
Daniel looked toward the lawn.
“I should have seen what was happening before you had to.”
Elena stayed.
Not because Daniel asked.
Because Lily did.
The little girl wrapped her arms around Elena.
“Please don’t go.”
Elena knelt.
“I’m not going anywhere today.”
One day became a week.
Then months.
Eventually Elena returned to college part-time.
She wanted to become a child psychologist.
Daniel paid tuition anonymously at first.
Elena discovered it and confronted him.
“I don’t need charity.”
“It isn’t charity.”
“What is it?”
Daniel smiled.
