Chapter 19 - THE FACE OF THE MONSTER

"You're late, Daniel," Sterling said smoothly, his silver hair neatly combed, his tuxedo spotless. He looked like an elder statesman preparing for a charity gala, not a man trafficking in human misery.
Daniel raised his weapon, leveling the barrel squarely at the center of Sterling’s forehead. "Hands where I can see them. One twitch, and your legacy ends on this carpet."
Sterling let out a soft, amused chuckle. He didn't raise his hands. Instead, he slowly leaned back in his leather chair. "You think you're the hero of this story, don't you? The gallant father rescuing his daughter from the wicked stepmother and the corrupt elite. How charmingly provincial."
"You chained my eight-year-old child to a column like an animal," Daniel growled, his finger tightening against the trigger. "You signed her death warrant."
"I signed her *preservation*," Sterling corrected, his eyes cold and lifeless as granite. "Vanessa was clumsy. A vulgar, nouveau-riche social climber who got sloppy with her champagne. Chaining Lily to that pillar was Vanessa’s panic, not the plan. The plan was clean. The plan was seamless. Lily possesses something far more valuable than you could ever imagine, Daniel."
"She is a child!"
"She is an heiress," Sterling whispered, leaning forward. "Did you really think your late brother died in a car accident? He discovered your grandfather’s offshore trust—a multi-billion-dollar maritime holding company that defaults entirely to Lily on her tenth birthday. Vanessa married you to get control of the guardianship. When you proved too difficult to manipulate, we had to expedite the transfer."

Daniel’s world tilted. The horror expanded exponentially. The ritual, the party, the cruelty—it was all an elaborate smoke screen engineered to declare Daniel unfit, Vanessa in control, and Lily silenced forever in a private sanitarium while Sterling and his cabal drained billions in sovereign assets.
"And now," Sterling smiled, pressing a discreet red button beneath his desk rim, "you have broken into my home with a firearm. Self-defense is such a wonderful statute in this state."
