Chapter 15 - THE WHISPER IN THE DARK

The rain turned into a torrential downpour, hammering against the truck’s metal roof like machine-gun fire. They pulled into a derelict motor lodge off Interstate 84, paying the toothless night manager fifty dollars cash for a room at the far end of the lot, completely shielded from the road.
Daniel checked every window latch, pushed the heavy oak dresser against the entry door, and sat on the edge of the twin bed. Lily sat across from him, sipping warm milk from a styrofoam cup. Her eyes were sunken, shadowed by exhaustion.
"Lily," Daniel began softly, kneeling before her so their eyes were level. "I need you to tell me something. And you don't have to be afraid. I am right here. Nothing in this universe can hurt you while I am with you."
Lily looked down at her small fingers, tracing the bruise on her wrist. "Is it about the room under the lake?"
Daniel’s breath hitched in his throat. "Yes."
Lily’s lower lip trembled, but she didn't cry. The emotional scar tissue ran too deep for tears. "Vanessa took me down there the night before the party. With the judge man. The man with the white hair and the gold ring."
"Judge Sterling," Daniel murmured.
"He told me if I ever told anyone what was in the wooden boxes under the floor, he would put Daddy in a deep hole where nobody could ever dig him up." Lily reached out, her small, cold hand touching Daniel’s cheek. "There were names carved on the boxes, Daddy. Five names. And one of them was mine."

Daniel pulled his daughter into his chest, wrapping his arms around her until she could feel the steady, thunderous beat of his heart. The horror was total. The party chain hadn't been a cruel punishment for a disobedient child; it had been a ritual marking. Lily was supposed to disappear that night. The only reason she hadn't was because Daniel had kicked down those French oak doors uninvited, shattering their timetable in front of dozens of high-society witnesses.
"They aren't going to put me in a hole, Lily," Daniel whispered against her hair, his eyes blazing with a feral, terrifying resolve. "I'm going to tear their empire down stone by stone."
