Chapter 13 - THE SAFE DEPOSIT BOX AT MIDNIGHT

The winding mountain road gave Daniel the tactical advantage he needed. He cut through an abandoned logging trail, kicking up a blinding curtain of red dust and gravel that forced the heavy Escalade to veer wide, its chassis scraping violently against a granite boulder. Daniel didn't look back; he gunned the engine through the tree line, emerging onto an unpaved county bypass miles ahead of his pursuer.
By nightfall, the neon lights of a forgotten industrial suburb buzzed through the drizzle. Daniel pulled into the rear alley behind a 24-hour private vault facility on the outskirts of Bridgeport—a discreet, concrete bunker used by corporate executives and underworld figures who valued absolute anonymity.
Leaving Lily hidden under the blanket with the engine running and doors deadbolted, Daniel slipped into the vault lobby under the watchful glare of four security cameras. The clerk behind the bulletproof glass barely looked up as Daniel slid a titanium key and a biometric token across the counter.
"Box 414," Daniel whispered.
Five minutes later, surrounded by cold steel walls inside private viewing room C, Daniel pulled the long metal drawer open.
Inside lay the classified dossier his late brother—an investigative journalist who had died under "suspicious circumstances" three years prior—had left behind. At the time, Daniel had thought his brother's obsession with elite private clubs was mere conspiracy. But as he spread the watermarked documents across the stainless steel table, the puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying precision.
The party where Lily had been chained wasn't an isolated drunken spectacle hosted by Vanessa. It was an initiation ceremony.
Photograph after photograph spilled across the table: high-ranking city officials, a prominent state senator, a chief appellate judge, and Vanessa, all standing in the marble courtyard of the lakeside estate. In every picture, a different child was visible in the background, adorned with that exact silver antique padlock.

And at the bottom of the stack was an invoice dated three days ago, paid from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands: *Retainer for Asset Retrieval: Lily Vance. Termination Authorization: Daniel Vance.*
The signature on the wire transfer was not Vanessa’s. It belonged to Judge Harrison Sterling—the very magistrate who had presided over Vanessa’s sentencing and publicly condemned her crimes.
