Chapter 20 - The Voice in the Ashes

By three o'clock in the morning, the storm had finally begun to crawl eastward toward the Atlantic, leaving behind a thick, creeping fog that hovered over the Connecticut hills.
Four fire trucks and half a dozen state police cruisers blocked the long, winding driveway of the Vance estate. The mansion still stood—the fire had been contained to the east wing before it could consume the main structure, thanks to Daniel’s quick response and the armed security team holding the perimeter until SWAT arrived. The attackers had been apprehended or neutralized.
Ethan sat on the rear bumper of an ambulance, a paramedic wrapping a thick bandage around the deep laceration on his forearm. Lily sat beside him, wrapped in two heavy wool blankets, sipping hot cocoa from a paper cup, Waffles resting his heavy head across her knees.
Daniel walked up, his face soot-stained and exhausted, holding a secure tablet.
"Eleanor is in federal custody at the state medical facility," Daniel reported quietly. "The encrypted drive you took from her coat was completely verified by the attorney general's office an hour ago. It contains the original unedited foundation ledgers, plus two years of emails between Eleanor and Vanessa detailing the entire conspiracy. The news networks have already issued retractions. Caroline’s name is completely cleared."
Ethan let out a long, ragged exhale, closing his eyes. The weight that had crushed his chest for days finally lifted. He reached over and gently squeezed Lily’s shoulder.
"You heard that, Lil?" Ethan murmured. "Mom is clear. It’s over."
Lily looked up at the blackened, smoke-damaged east wing of the grand mansion, then looked at her father. A soft, sad smile touched her lips. "We survived again, Dad."
"We did," Ethan said, pulling her close.
Suddenly, a junior detective approached Daniel, holding an evidence bag containing a charred, vintage tape recorder retrieved from the burned ruins of the east wing study.
"Mr. Vance," the detective said hesitantly. "The arson squad found this hidden inside the floorboards behind the fireplace in your late wife’s old painting studio. It was in a fireproof lockbox. The box was breached by heat, but the magnetic tape inside survived. It’s marked with your wife’s handwriting: *'FOR ETHAN — OPEN ONLY IF I DON'T COME HOME.'*"
Ethan’s breath caught in his throat. He took the evidence bag with trembling hands.
"Do you have a player?" Ethan asked, his voice barely audible.
The detective nodded, stepping back to his cruiser and returning with an old cassette deck. Ethan placed the tape inside, hit play, and held the speaker close to his ear, with Lily leaning in beside him.
Through the static and hiss of the old magnetic ribbon, Caroline’s voice emerged—clear, melodic, but trembling with absolute, suffocating terror.
*"Ethan... if you're listening to this, Eleanor found me. But you need to know the truth before it's too late. Eleanor didn't act on her own. She is working for a man who sits at the very top of Vance Global. Someone you trust with your life. And Ethan... Lily isn't my biological daughter. She is—"*

A loud, sharp pop of static tore through the recording, followed by dead silence. The tape had snapped.
Ethan stood up slowly, the cold night wind whipping his wet hair against his forehead, staring into the dark, foggy woods, as the chilling realization hit him that the nightmare had not ended. It had only just begun.
