Chapter 13 - The Sister Who Never Existed

"Look at me, Lily," Ethan commanded gently, lifting her chin with a thumb so she met his unwavering gaze. "Your mother was the kindest, most honorable human being to walk this earth. Whatever these people are saying, whatever lies are on that screen, they are meant to hurt us. They want us to hide. They want us divided. We do not hide."

Lily wiped her cheek with the back of her sleeve, sniffing. "Then who sent those papers, Dad? Why does the news have Mom’s signature?"

"Because someone stole her name," Ethan said with a dark, chilling certainty. "And I am going to tear down whoever did it."

An hour later, Lily was safely upstairs under the watchful eye of Maria and two armed guards, distracted by Waffles barking playfully at a stuffed squirrel. Downstairs, in the library, Ethan and Daniel stood over a mountain of archival records. Daniel had bypassed standard probate archives, pulling sealed family records from Rhode Island dating back thirty years.

"Her name is Eleanor Vance-Sterling," Daniel said, slapping a manila folder onto the conference table. "Or at least, that was her maiden name. Eleanor Sterling. Caroline’s older twin sister."

Ethan stared at the black-and-white photograph inside the dossier. The resemblance was uncanny, almost supernatural. Eleanor had the same high cheekbones, the same luminous eyes as Caroline. But where Caroline’s expression in old photographs was warm and open, Eleanor’s was cold, predatory, and sharp.

"Twins?" Ethan whispered, a cold bead of sweat trickling down the back of his neck. "Caroline told me she was an only child. Her parents died in a house fire when she was sixteen."

"That fire wasn't an accident, Ethan," Daniel said, his voice lowering to a conspiratorial hiss. "The police files from Newport were sealed, but Eleanor was remanded to a psychiatric facility for three years following the fire. When she turned eighteen, she vanished. Changed her name three times. And guess who was listed as a junior beneficiary on Eleanor's last known trust account six years ago?"

Ethan didn't need to guess. "Vanessa."

"Vanessa wasn't working alone to seize your money," Daniel revealed, leaning forward. "Vanessa was Eleanor’s proxy. When you married Vanessa, you thought you were finding someone to heal this home. In reality, Eleanor hand-picked Vanessa, groomed her, and planted her in your life. The target wasn't just your logistics empire. It was Caroline’s bloodline. It was Lily."

"Why?" Ethan’s voice was barely a growl. "Why wait until now? Why the chain? Why humiliate Lily like that?"

"Because Eleanor doesn't just want to kill you or take your wealth, Ethan," Daniel said softly, looking at his friend with deep pity. "She wants to destroy Caroline’s legacy piece by piece. She wants Lily to suffer the exact same degradation Eleanor felt she suffered as a child. And now that Vanessa failed and landed in Rikers, Eleanor has stepped out of the shadows."

Suddenly, the lights throughout the mansion flickered once, twice, and then plunged into total, suffocating darkness.
