Chapter 15 - The Cold Scent of Rain

"Lily!" Ethan’s roar shook the very foundations of the bedroom.
He lunged toward the window, peering out into the torrential darkness. The heavy rain obscured the estate grounds, turning the sprawling lawns into a murky sea of black and gray. Below the window, a heavy rope ladder hung securely fastened to the iron radiator pipe.
"They didn't break in to attack," Daniel breathed, rushing into the room with a flashlight, his beam illuminating small, wet footprints leading from the closet to the window. "Ethan... look at this."
On the desk, beside Lily’s sketchbook, was a handwritten note in Lily’s neat, round handwriting.
*“Dad, she called my phone. She told me she has Mom’s journals. She told me if I didn't come down to the boathouse alone, she would send the police to arrest you for the missing foundation money. I can’t let them hurt you anymore. I’m sorry. I love you.”*
"She traded herself to protect me," Ethan choked out, his voice cracking with a pain so profound it threatened to tear his ribs apart. "She thought she was saving me."
"The boathouse is half a mile through the woods, on the edge of the lake," Daniel said, already pulling an emergency tactical radio from his vest. "I'll call the state police, the SWAT team—"
"No police!" Ethan snapped, turning with eyes so dark they looked like twin voids. "Eleanor has informants in the state prosecutor's office. That’s how the foundation files were leaked simultaneously to every news outlet. If police sirens come down that road, Eleanor will put a bullet in Lily’s head before they reach the gate."
Ethan grabbed a heavy waterproof tactical jacket and extra magazines from his hidden gun locker beneath the wardrobe. His terror had calcified into pure, unadulterated lethal focus.
"You secure the house and get Marcus to a hospital," Ethan ordered Daniel. "Take the captive down to the cellar and make him talk. I’m going to the lake."
"Ethan, you can't go alone! It’s an ambush!" Daniel yelled, grabbing Ethan’s arm.
Ethan ripped his arm away, staring at Daniel with a look that made the seasoned security chief take a step back. "She put a chain on my daughter once while I was miles away. I wasn't there to stop it. I am not letting someone touch her again. I will burn that lake to the ground."

Without another word, Ethan leaped onto the windowsill and swung down the rope ladder into the raging tempest.
