Chapter 19 - The Lake of Shattered Glass

Eleanor screamed in agony as cartilage crunched beneath the impact. Her grip slipped, the syringe flying from her hand and shattering against the floorboards, splashing the deadly liquid harmlessly across the wood.
Ethan moved with explosive, predatory speed.
He didn't reach for the gun. He closed the ten feet between them in a single bound, tackling Eleanor away from Lily. They crashed through the rotten wooden partition of the loft, tumbling down the short flight of stairs in a tangle of limbs, hitting the lower dock with bone-crushing force.
Eleanor was ferociously strong, fueled by madness. She clawed at Ethan's eyes, her sharp nails drawing bloody furrows across his cheek. She pulled a small boot knife from her ankle holster, slashing wildly. The blade sliced across Ethan's forearm, ripping through his tactical jacket and drawing a deep crimson line.
Ethan ignored the pain. He grabbed Eleanor’s wrist, twisting it inward until the bone popped with a sickening crack. The knife dropped into the dark water below. He pinned her to the edge of the dock, one heavy hand clamped around her throat, the other securing her pinned arm.
"It’s over, Eleanor," Ethan breathed heavily, blood dripping from his chin onto her pale, twisted face. "Your game is finished."
Eleanor choked under his grip, but her eyes were still burning with hatred. "You think... you won?" she wheezed, a bloody bubble forming at the corner of her lips. "Check... the house, Ethan. Why do you think... I sent only three men here?"
Ethan's blood turned to ice. "What did you do?"
"The boathouse was just the bait," Eleanor laughed, a rasping, choking sound. "The rest of my team... isn't here. They're back at the mansion. To burn down Caroline’s house... with your precious staff inside. While you played hero in the rain... everything she ever built is turning to ash!"
Above them, the deafening drone of helicopter blades suddenly shattered the storm. A blinding spotlight cut through the rain from the sky, illuminating the entire boathouse in harsh, clinical white light.
"STATE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND STAY WHERE YOU ARE!" a voice boomed through an external loudspeaker.
Daniel hadn't obeyed orders. He had brought the entire state tactical unit.
Ethan snatched the encrypted flash drive from Eleanor’s coat pocket and shoved her toward the blinding light as heavily armed SWAT officers stormed the dock, pinning her to the planks.
"Dad!" Lily’s voice came from the top of the stairs. She was free from the ropes, running down toward him, throwing her small, trembling arms around his waist.

Ethan wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her wet hair. "I’ve got you, baby. I’ve got you."
