Chapter 19 - The Fire Within

Daniel looked at the brass tag dangling between the beeping red LED lights.

It wasn't an ordinary tag. The back of the brass plate had a microscopic seam running along its perimeter.

"Give me a tactical knife!" Daniel shouted.

Marcus flipped a carbon-steel combat blade into Daniel’s palm.

Daniel held his breath, his hands becoming stone-still despite the thundering terror in his chest. He slipped the razor-thin blade into the microscopic seam of the brass tag and pried upward with precise force.

The face of the tag popped off.

Inside was a miniature microchip and a tiny copper contact point.

"Cut the copper, sir!" Marcus yelled. "Or bridge it?"

Daniel looked at his sleeping son. He remembered Clara sitting at the piano, teaching Mason how to play simple chords. *“If you press the wrong note, darling, you don’t stop the music. You harmonize it.”*

The copper wasn't a ground. It was an interrupter.

Daniel didn't cut it. He rammed the tip of the steel blade directly across both contact points, fusing them together with raw force and creating an intentional dead short.

The digital screen flickered wildly—*00:01*—and went completely dark.

A sharp mechanical click echoed through the silent foundry. The hydraulic clamps released.

The heavy collar dropped into Daniel’s trembling hands.

Daniel threw the lethal device across the room, where it crashed harmlessly against the concrete wall. He collapsed against the chair, scooping Mason’s limp, warm body into his arms, pulling his son tight against his chest, burying his face in the boy’s soft hair.

Mason let out a tiny, groggy whimper. His small eyelids fluttered open, brown and beautiful.

"Daddy...?" Mason whispered, his voice faint but alive. "Did we finish the treehouse...?"

Daniel broke. Tears poured down his face as he kissed Mason’s forehead, his cheeks, his hair. "Yeah, buddy. We’re going to build the biggest treehouse in the world. Daddy’s got you. You’re safe."

Marcus lowered his rifle, wiping sweat from his brow, exhaling a ragged breath. "Sir... Mercer’s blood trail leads to the lower drainage canals. He went into the bay. The Coast Guard is sweeping the harbor, but the storm is too rough."

Daniel stood up, holding his son securely against his body. His tears dried instantly, replaced by a glacial, unyielding resolve.

"Let him run," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "He has no money. No allies. No empire. And when he comes up for air, I’ll be waiting."
