Chapter 14 - The Ghost of Julian Mercer

Back at the Vance headquarters in the heart of the financial district, the sixty-fourth floor was locked down like a war room.
Daniel stood before a massive interactive glass display, surrounded by high-level private investigators, cyber-security operatives, and Marcus. Dossiers, bank transcripts, and thirty-year-old black-and-white photographs floated across the glowing screens.
"Julian Mercer," Marcus said, tapping a file on the main monitor. A face materialized: sharp cheekbones, piercing steel-blue eyes, and a cruel, symmetrical smile. "He was your father’s founding partner thirty-five years ago. They built Vance-Mercer Global together."
"What happened between them?" Daniel asked, his tie loosened, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his scarred forearms.
"Mercer was an extremist," an analyst chimed in. "In the late nineties, he wanted to pivot the company into illegal private military contracting and biological weapons testing. Your father blew the whistle. Arthur cooperated with the FBI, seized Mercer’s equity through a hostile takeover, and sent Mercer to a federal supermax for twenty-five years."
"When was he released?" Daniel asked, cold realization dawning on him.
"He wasn't," Marcus said grimly. "Official records say Julian Mercer died during a prison riot in Florence, Colorado, four years ago. His body was cremated."
"Fake death," Daniel stated without hesitation. "He walked out during the chaos. And Arthur’s sudden heart attack two years ago? The strange, untraceable toxin that took Clara within six weeks?"
"All point directly to Mercer’s proprietary chemical portfolio," Marcus confirmed. "He took your father. He took your wife. And now that Victoria’s public humiliation has eliminated her utility, he’s coming to collect the debt in person."
At that moment, the central terminal let out a sharp alarm.
"Sir!" the chief cyber analyst shouted. "We have an unauthorized override on the estate’s secondary power grid. The primary servers at your home are being bypassed!"
Daniel’s blood froze. "Where is Mason?"
"He’s in the secure panic room with Mrs. Gable and four heavy contractors," Marcus replied, already pulling his tactical tablet from his vest. "The panic room has an independent air filtration system and twelve inches of ballistic steel. Nothing short of an antitank missile can crack it."
"Pull the live feed," Daniel commanded.
The analyst tapped the screen. The screen flashed black for three seconds before resolving into the live interior camera of the subterranean panic room.
Mrs. Gable, Mason’s elderly nanny, was reading a picture book to Mason on the leather sofa. The boy looked up, smiling at something outside the frame. Standing guard near the vault door were two armored operatives.

Suddenly, the lights inside the panic room flickered.
A faint white vapor began hissing through the high-grade ventilation shafts.
