Chapter 18 - The Hunter’s Trap

In the fraction of a second before Julian’s hammer struck the firing pin, Daniel didn't flinch—he lunged.
He had memorized the trajectory. Daniel rolled hard to his left across the greasy concrete. The rifle shot tore into the floor where his skull had been a millisecond earlier, the deafening crack echoing through the cavernous foundry.
From beneath his combat boot, Daniel drew his backup weapon—a ceramic, undetectable snub-nosed .357 magnum.
Daniel fired twice from the floor.
The first hollow-point round took Julian through the right shoulder, spinning him around and causing him to drop the rifle. The second bullet tore clean through Julian’s hand.
The glass vial flew into the air.
"NO!" Julian screamed, clutching his ruined arm.
Daniel sprang from the floor like a wounded beast, lunging forward with outstretched arms. He hit the concrete hard, his chest absorbing the impact, his right hand sliding across the ground to catch the falling vial just inches before it shattered against the stone.
The glass remained intact.
*02:45.*
Behind him, Julian rolled behind an industrial generator, his frantic footsteps pounding as he scrambled toward an emergency escape hatch. "It doesn't matter, Daniel! The collar still blows! You can't disarm the frequency!"
Daniel ignored the fleeing phantom. He turned and sprinted to Mason’s chair.
"Hold on, buddy. Hold on, Mason," Daniel choked out, his hands shaking violently as he pulled out the syringe. With surgical precision, he drove the needle into Mason’s arm and plunged the golden serum deep into the boy’s bloodstream.
Mason let out a sharp, shuddering gasp. The color slowly began creeping back into the boy’s gray cheeks, but his eyes remained shut, his body limp.
*01:15.*
The collar began beeping in rapid, piercing bursts. The timer was flashing red: *00:59... 00:58...*
"Marcus!" Daniel roared into his earpiece. "Where the hell are you?!"
The heavy doors blew inward as Marcus and six tactical operators burst into the foundry, weapons drawn. "Sir! We’ve secured the perimeter! Mercer’s men are neutralized!"
"I need explosive ordnance disposal right now!" Daniel screamed, wrapping his bare hands around the steel collar, trying to pry the locked mechanism away from his son’s tiny neck. The metal was locked with a four-stage digital tumblers system.
"Boss, it’s tamper-rigged!" Marcus yelled, skidding to a halt beside them, shining a light on the flashing detonator. "If you cut the band, the circuit closes! It needs a physical bypass key!"
*00:32.*

"Where is the key?!" Daniel demanded, looking around the cavernous room.
Then, Daniel remembered the riddle from the ledger. *The lock is where the blood began.*
