Chapter 12 - The Whispering Shadow in the Nursery

Daniel took the grand staircase three steps at a time, the heavy oak steps groaning beneath his weight. His mind was a tempest of roaring adrenaline. Every shadow lurking in the corridor seemed to mock his vow at Clara’s grave.

"Boss!" Marcus appeared at the end of the second-floor gallery, his assault rifle raised. "What’s wrong?"

"Mason!" Daniel roared. "Move! Now!"

The two bodyguards outside Mason’s bedroom snapped to attention, their hands resting on their holsters. "Sir, no one has breached the floor. Sensors are completely green."

Daniel didn't answer. He kicked the double oak doors open, slamming them against the wall.

The room was bathed in the soft blue illumination of Mason’s favorite star-shaped nightlight. Across the room, nestled in his racing-car bed, the six-year-old boy slept soundly, his small face relaxed in peaceful dreams, his thumb lightly tucked into his lips.

Daniel’s chest heaved. He lowered the barrel of his weapon, exhaling a ragged breath. For a second, he thought it was a sick psychological game designed to drive him mad.

Then Marcus’s flashlight beam swept across the fireplace mantel.

Marcus froze. "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph..."

Daniel followed the beam. Resting squarely in the center of the white marble mantelpiece, right beneath a framed photograph of Clara holding baby Mason, was an object that made Daniel’s vision swim with red rage.

It was an exact replica of the crystal-studded leather dog collar Victoria had used to torture Mason. But this one was different.

The brass tag dangling from the ring wasn't blank. Engraved into the metal in crisp, brand-new lettering was Mason’s full legal name, his exact birthdate, and below it, an ominous countdown: *Seventy-Two Hours.*

Daniel crossed the room in two strides, snatching the collar from the mantel. The metal felt ice-cold in his palm, smelling faintly of synthetic motor oil and ozone.

"How did this get in here?" Daniel turned on his men, his voice trembling with a terrifying, contained fury. "This house is an impenetrable fortress! Who walked into my son's bedroom while you stood outside like garden statues?!"

The two guards turned white, their eyes darting around the sealed room. The windows were latched from the inside; the biometric sensors showed zero tampering.

"Daniel..." Marcus whispered, stepping over to the floor-to-ceiling balcony curtains. "Look at the floor."

On the light gray carpet, leading directly from the ventilation grate behind the vintage toy chest toward Mason’s bed, were faint, damp boot prints. Whoever had delivered the collar had stood beside Mason while he slept, watching the boy breathe.
