Chapter 8 - The Terminal at Midnight

The Brooklyn Navy Yard was an abyss of rusted iron, looming cranes, and freezing salt spray. Rain whipped across the black waters of the East River, turning the concrete piers into sheets of slick, mirrored ice.

A single halogen lamp hung above the gangway of the container vessel *Prometheus*, casting long, distorted shadows across the wet deck.

Adrian Moretti stood in the center of the illuminated tarmac, his overcoat flapping in the icy wind, clutching a slim leather portfolio. Standing twenty paces away, surrounded by four armed operatives in heavy tactical gear, was Salvatore Russo.

Salvatore was an old vulture—sixty-five years old, with silver hair slicked back, wearing a bespoke cashmere coat that couldn't hide the predatory hunch of his shoulders.

"You took your time, Adrian," Salvatore's voice cut through the sound of churning diesel engines. "I was beginning to think you didn't value your little schoolteacher's life."

"The proxies are signed," Adrian said, his voice flat, steady as an iceberg. "Full voting control of Moretti Capital’s international logistics division. Transferred directly to your shell company in Cyprus. Now call off the contracts."

Salvatore smiled, revealing gold-capped teeth. "You really are an extraordinary fool, Adrian. Your father was a thief, but at least he understood that sentimentality is a fatal disease. You honestly believed I would let you walk away from this pier alive?"

Two of Salvatore’s men raised suppressed submachine guns, aiming them squarely at Adrian’s chest.

Adrian didn't flinch. He didn't even reach for his weapon. He simply stood there, staring at Salvatore with cold contempt.

"I know you won't let me leave, Salvatore," Adrian said quietly. "That's why I didn't come to negotiate for my life. I came to negotiate for hers. The proxies become void if my death is ruled a homicide before eight o'clock tomorrow morning. Carter & Vance holds the counter-signatures. Call off the contract on Claire, and the money is yours. Shoot me now, and you inherit nothing but a federal murder indictment."

Salvatore’s eyes narrowed. "A dead man doesn't enforce conditions, Adrian."

"He doesn't," a new voice echoed across the open pier. "But a living witness does."

Headlights cut through the darkness from behind the rusted shipping containers. A heavy armored Suburban slammed to a halt forty yards away, its high beams bathing Salvatore and his men in blinding white light.

Adrian’s head whipped around, his face instantly contorting with violent terror as he recognized the vehicle. "No! Marco, what have you done?!"

The passenger door opened. Vanessa Russo stepped out into the glare, followed by Marco, whose rifle was leveled at Salvatore’s lead guard.

"Uncle Salvatore," Vanessa shouted over the wind, her voice clear and strong despite her frail body. "Did you really think Adrian was the only one who kept records?"

Salvatore’s face turned the color of curdled milk. "Vanessa? You insolent little bitch—"

"I handed the physical ledgers from the Milan shipping accounts to the Deputy Director of the FBI thirty minutes ago," Vanessa said, walking forward into the light, showing her bandaged hand without shame. "Every wire transfer. Every weapon shipment. Every bribe paid to the port authority. The federal raid isn't scheduled for midnight, Uncle. They’ve been surrounding this harbor for fifteen minutes."

Right on cue, the pitch-black waters of the East River erupted into brilliant blinding light.

Three Coast Guard tactical cutters swept around the pier, high-powered searchlights illuminating the *Prometheus* from water level, their sirens wailing like banshees into the night sky. From the perimeter of the Navy Yard, dozens of dark vehicles roared into the terminal, federal tactical teams spilling out with shields and assault rifles.

"FBI! Drop your weapons! Drop your weapons now!"

"Kill him!" Salvatore screamed, lunging backward toward the gangway, pointing wildly at Adrian.

The guard on the right raised his weapon, his finger tightening on the trigger aimed directly at Adrian’s chest.

Adrian didn't dive for cover. Instead, his eyes locked onto the Suburban, where I had just stepped out into the freezing rain behind Marco. His entire focus was on me—on the terror on my face, on my hand clutching my belly.

*Crack!*

The gunshot echoed across the concrete.

Adrian twisted violently, a muffled gasp tearing from his lips as the bullet caught him in the right side of his chest. He staggered back two steps, his hand clutching the dark fabric of his coat as blood instantly began to bloom through his fingers.

"ADRIAN!" I screamed, breaking away from Marco’s grip, sprinting across the slick concrete through the rain, uncaring of the shouting agents, the gunfire erupting around the gangway, or the flashing red and blue lights blinding the sky.

Salvatore’s guard never fired a second shot; a federal sniper from the overhead crane dropped him instantly. Salvatore was tackled to the deck of the gangway by four tactical agents, his face pressed into the freezing salt slush.

I fell to my knees beside Adrian, catching his shoulders as he collapsed onto the wet tarmac.

"Adrian! Adrian, look at me!" I sobbed, pulling his heavy head into my lap, my hands desperately pressing against the wound in his chest, trying to stem the hot rush of crimson that was staining his white shirt, my coat, my skin.

Adrian looked up at me, his slate-gray eyes hazy with shock, rain washing over his pale face. Yet, even as his breath rattled in his throat, a faint, impossible smile touched his lips.

"You... you shouldn't be... in the cold," he coughed, blood flecking his lips.

"Shut up! Shut up, you idiot!" I wept, pressing down harder on the wound, my tears mixing with the rain on his cheeks. "Don't you dare close your eyes! Don't you dare leave me! We're having a daughter, Adrian! Do you hear me? We're having a girl! You have to teach her how to fight, you have to be there!"

Adrian raised his left hand, his trembling fingers stained with his own blood, and reached up to touch my face. His thumb stroked my cheek with the gentlest, purest tenderness I had ever felt.

"I heard her heart," he whispered, his voice fading like a dying ember. "Claire... I heard her heart through the door. It was... the most beautiful thing... I ever heard."

His hand slipped from my cheek. His eyes rolled back, and his body went completely limp in my arms.

"MEDIC!" I screamed into the howling storm, clutching his lifeless body against my chest. "SOMEBODY HELP HIM! MEDIC!"
