Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Threat

The thumb drive sat on my table like an unexploded bomb.

After Marco left, I didn't touch it for hours. I sat on the sofa, watching the afternoon light fade into the bruised purple of an autumn twilight, feeling the faint, rhythmic flutter within my womb. My baby. Our baby.

When I finally plugged the drive into my laptop, the screen bloomed with hundreds of scanned photographs and surveillance logs.

My breath caught in my throat.

There were photos of me buying flowers at the Union Square greenmarket. Photos of me having lunch with my sister at a café in Soho. Photos of me stepping out of a cab outside our building, laughing on the phone with Adrian. Across every single picture, scribbled in red wax pencil, were dates, times, and exit points.

Attached to the images were transcripts of encrypted communications.

*Target: Claire Bennett Moretti. Routine predictable. No armored transport. Extraction feasible within ninety seconds at 79th Street intersection.*

Beneath that was a single response from an untraceable IP address, written in Adrian's cold, unmistakable cadence:

*Touch her, and I burn every Russo asset from Rotterdam to Singapore to ash. I have the port authority ledgers. Try me.*

I sobbed into my hands, the horror washing over me in cold waves. While I had been resenting him for his cold dinners and late arrivals, Adrian had been standing between me and an execution squad every single second of every single day.

Why was he at St. Catherine’s yesterday?

The answer was in the final folder on the drive, labeled *ST. CATHERINE / EXTRACTION PROTOCOL.*

Adrian had finally tracked Vanessa Russo down. She hadn't been in Milan. Salvatore had moved her to an abandoned warehouse near the Red Hook piers, keeping her starved and sick to force Adrian’s compliance. Two nights before my ultrasound, Adrian’s private tactical unit—led by Marco—had raided the warehouse, pulled Vanessa out half-dead, and rushed her to St. Catherine’s under an assumed identity.

Adrian had been there yesterday to ensure she was guarded by twenty armed men, because as long as Vanessa was alive and in protective custody, Salvatore lost his leverage. Adrian was mere hours away from dropping the hammer on Salvatore Russo with the FBI's organized crime division.

He was finishing the war.

He was finally coming to the end of his nightmare.

And right at the finish line, he had run into me, sixteen weeks pregnant with the child he had never known he had created.

The front buzzer rang, sharp and persistent.

I didn't need to ask who it was. I walked to the window and looked down through the blinds. Parked across the street was a black Maybach with tinted windows, its engine idling silently in the rain. Standing on the brownstone steps, his collar turned up against the cold, his dark hair soaked with sleet, was Adrian.

He didn't ring again. He just stood there, looking up at my third-floor window, looking like a man awaiting his execution.

I walked down the stairs, every step heavy with the weight of revelation and betrayal. Not betrayal of love, but the unforgivable betrayal of silence.

I unlocked the outer door. The cold autumn wind rushed in, carrying the scent of wet asphalt and dead leaves. Adrian looked at me, his eyes dark with sleeplessness, shadows hollowed out beneath his cheekbones.

"You shouldn't be standing in the draft," he said softly, his voice rough. "You'll catch cold."

Even now. Even with the world burning around him, his instinct was to manage my temperature.

"You're a coward, Adrian," I said, my voice trembling.

Adrian flinched, but he didn't look away. "I know."

"You thought you were a hero," I whispered, tears spilling hot onto my cheeks. "You thought you were playing God, moving chess pieces on a board so you could save the little woman who couldn't protect herself. You decided my life, my marriage, and my future without ever asking me if I wanted to fight beside you!"

Adrian swallowed hard. He stepped onto the threshold, his hands hanging limp at his sides, refusing to force his way in.

"I couldn't risk you, Claire," he whispered, a desperate crack breaking his composure. "You don't know what these men are capable of. You don't know what they do to the people they capture. If anything had happened to you because of my family's filth, I wouldn't have survived it. I would have put a bullet through my own skull."

"So instead, you put a bullet through my heart!" I screamed at him, stepping into the rain on the top step, uncaring that the sleet was soaking my hair. "You let me believe you stopped loving me! You let me believe you went back to Vanessa! You let me walk out into this city alone, pregnant, terrified, thinking my husband discarded me like an old coat!"

Adrian reached out, his large hands grasping my trembling shoulders. He pulled me toward him, not with force, but with a pleading desperation that shattered the last remnant of his icy corporate facade.

"I'm sorry," he choked out, burying his face into my wet hair, his body trembling with suppressed sobs. "God help me, Claire, I am so sorry. I thought if you hated me, you would be safe. I thought hate would make you run far enough away that their shadows couldn't reach you. I didn't know about our baby. If I had known... Claire, if I had known..."

"What would you have done, Adrian?" I pulled back, looking into his tormented, gray eyes. "Would you have locked me in a gilded cage? Would you have lied to me more?"

May you like

Before he could answer, the sharp shriek of tearing tires shattered the quiet street.
