Chapter 5 - The Glass Shatters

From the corner of Cranberry Street, a black SUV with blacked-out plates accelerated recklessly down the narrow Brooklyn avenue, its headlights blazing like demonic eyes through the rain.

Adrian's reaction was instantaneous.

He didn't shout. He didn't hesitate. In one violent, fluid motion, his arm wrapped around my waist, his other hand gripping the nape of my neck, and he threw his entire weight over me, driving us both through the open doorway of the brownstone and slamming us hard against the parquet floor of the entryway.

*Crack-crack-crack-crack!*

The deafening chatter of automatic gunfire erupted outside.

The heavy oak front door splintered into flying shards of timber. The glass transom above the entrance shattered into thousands of crystal daggers, showering down over Adrian’s back as he completely enclosed my body beneath his own.

I screamed, my hands flying instantly to my stomach, curling myself into a tight ball beneath his massive frame.

"Stay down!" Adrian roared, his voice deafening in the enclosed vestibule. "Claire, do not move!"

Outside, the squeal of tires was abruptly answered by the roar of the Maybach’s engine. Marco. Adrian’s security detail had anticipated an attack. A thunderous crash shook the pavement outside as Marco’s armored vehicle rammed the SUV, followed by the sharp, disciplined cracks of return fire from semi-automatic handguns.

Adrian pushed himself up slightly, his face pale with adrenaline, his eyes wildly scanning my body. "Are you hit? Claire! Look at me! Are you hurt?"

"I'm okay... I'm okay," I gasped, choking on the acrid smell of gunpowder and pulverized plaster. My hands were shaking uncontrollably against my stomach. "The baby... I think the baby is okay..."

Adrian reached down, his hands trembling as he gently touched my belly, checking for blood, checking for wounds. When he found none, a ragged, guttural sob escaped his throat. He pulled me into his chest, holding me so tightly I could hear his heart hammering like a trapped beast against his ribs.

"I've got you," he whispered fiercely, his voice shaking with a terror I had never heard in him before. "I've got both of you. Nobody touches you. Nobody."

Footsteps pounded up the stone steps outside. Adrian instantly shoved me behind the cover of the inner staircase, snatching a snub-nosed Glock from his concealed holster beneath his suit coat with terrifying speed. He aimed it dead at the shattered doorway, his finger resting lightly on the trigger, his eyes cold as death.

"Adrian! It's me! Clear!" Marco shouted, stepping through the ruined frame, his weapon lowered, a streak of soot across his forehead.

Adrian didn't lower his gun immediately. His whole frame was coiled like a steel spring. "Report."

"SUV immobilized. Two shooters down, the driver fled on foot toward Cadman Plaza," Marco said rapidly, his breathing ragged. "Salvatore’s men knew we moved Vanessa. They figured out that you weren't guarding Vanessa yourself because your eyes were fixed on Brooklyn. They traced you here, boss."

Adrian slowly lowered the weapon, his knuckles white against the grip. The realization hit him like a physical blow: his desperate visit to see me had led the monsters straight to my door.

"Get the secondary transport," Adrian ordered, his voice dropping into that chilling, lethal tone that signaled total war. "We move now. To the Vault."

"Adrian, no," I said, struggling to stand as I leaned against the banister. My knees were shaking so badly I could barely support my own weight. "I'm not going anywhere with you. I need to go to the hospital. I need to make sure the baby didn't suffer trauma from the fall."

Adrian turned to me. The billionaire, the untouchable titan of finance, looked at me with tears cutting tracks through the dust on his cheeks. He sank to his knees right there on the ruined foyer floor, looking up at me.

"We will go to the hospital right now, Claire," he said, his voice pleading, stripped of all pride, all arrogance. "We will have Hastings check every heartbeat, every inch. But you cannot stay here. They know where you live. They know you are carrying my blood. If you stay here, they will kill you to break me."

He reached out, his hand hovering near my knee, not daring to touch me without permission.

"Let me protect you," he begged. "Not as your husband. Not as a man who has any right to demand your love. Just as a shield. Let me keep you and our child alive. After that... if you want me out of your life forever, I will sign whatever papers you put in front of me and never look at you again. Just let me keep you alive."

I looked at the shattered glass around us. I looked at the bullet holes scarring the walls where my neighbors lived. And I looked down at the man who had torn my world apart out of a twisted, terrifying devotion.

"Call the hospital," I whispered. "And then get us out of here."
