Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Confrontation

The monitors in the panic room flickered with static and high-definition terror. I watched in frozen horror as Victor Vance and two of his heavily armed mercenaries stalked down the main corridor, their boots crunching on shattered glass and expensive porcelain. They were heading straight for the master study—right toward the hidden entrance of the panic room.
Sophie, sensing the palpable tension in the air, burrowed her face into my waist, her small frame trembling violently. "Mommy, what’s that loud noise?" she whispered, tears pooling in her wide brown eyes.
"It’s just thunder, baby," I lied, my voice cracking as I pulled her tight against my chest, shielding her ears. "Everything is going to be okay. Your papa is coming."
Even as I said the words, a cold knot of dread tightened in my stomach. Dominic was outnumbered, fighting a multi-front war on his own turf.
On the central monitor, the heavy oak doors of the master study were kicked violently off their hinges. Vance stepped inside, scanning the room with cold, calculating eyes. He raised his pistol, aiming directly at the false wall panel where the biometric scanner for our panic room was concealed.
"I know you built this bolt-hole, Dominic!" Vance sneered into the empty room, knowing the intercom was broadcasting straight to us. "You think you can hide your little whore and your brat from me? Come out and face me like a man, or I'll blow this entire wing sky-high!"
Suddenly, the overhead lights in the study flickered and died. Total, pitch-black darkness swallowed the room on the screen.
Vance froze, his mercenaries raising their assault rifles, sweeping their laser sights across the shadows. "Check the corners!" Vance barked nervously.
From the ceiling rafters, a dark figure dropped silently like a panther.
Before the mercenaries could react, Dominic Valenti landed squarely on top of the lead gunman, driving him into the hardwood floor with bone-crushing force. The gun went flying. In a blur of relentless, cold-blooded fury, Dominic moved with terrifying efficiency. He didn't hesitate, didn't negotiate—every strike was calculated to incapacitate permanently.
In less than thirty seconds, the two mercenaries were unconscious on the floor.
Vance spun around, raising his pistol just as Dominic emerged from the shadows. A deafening gunshot shattered the silence of the room, echoing through the intercom speakers.
I screamed, my hands flying over my mouth. On the screen, Dominic staggered backward, clutching his shoulder as a dark stain of blood bloomed across his black shirt. Vance grinned maliciously, stepping forward to deliver the killing blow.

"It ends here, Valenti," Vance hissed, raising his weapon for a point-blank shot.
But Dominic didn't fall. With a low, feral growl born of a decade of pure rage and the desperate need to protect his family, Dominic lunged forward like a striking viper, tackling Vance through the reinforced glass window of the study. They crashed out onto the stone balcony overlooking the courtyard, tumbling down into the garden below in a violent tangle of limbs and fury.
