Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

For the next two weeks, the Lake Forest estate transformed into something resembling a real home. Dominic threw himself into fatherhood with the same fanatical intensity he applied to his criminal empire. He read Sophie bedtime stories every night, taught her how to paint clumsy watercolor flowers in his massive study, and even allowed her to put pink plastic hairclips into his dark, styled hair while his terrified bodyguards stood outside the door trying hard not to laugh.
For the first time in my life, I felt safe. The West Side apartment felt like a distant, feverish nightmare.
But in Dominic Valenti’s world, peace was never permanent; it was merely the quiet before the hurricane.
It happened on a crisp Tuesday afternoon. Dominic had been called away to an emergency summit downtown regarding a territorial dispute with the Outfit—a rival faction that had been growing increasingly bold. I was in the greenhouse at the back of the estate, tending to a row of orchids, while Sophie napped soundly in her upstairs suite under the watchful eye of Marcus and two other senior guards.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the greenhouse burst open.
Marcus rushed in, his face pale, his hand gripping the grip of his sidearm. "Claire, we have a breach. Perimeter alarms tripped at the western gate. Professional hit squad. At least six men."
My heart hammered against my ribs, choking off my breath. "Sophie! Where is Sophie?"
"She's secured in the panic room behind the master study," Marcus said, grabbing my arm and pulling me toward the main house. "Valenti anticipated this. He gave strict orders to get you both underground the second things went south."
As we sprinted through the manicured gardens toward the mansion, the unmistakable pop of silenced gunfire echoed through the crisp autumn air from the front courtyard. Smoke began billowing near the grand entrance. The rival faction hadn't come to negotiate; they had come to wipe out the Valenti bloodline at its root.
We barricaded ourselves inside the heavy steel-reinforced panic room. It was a sterile, high-tech sanctuary lined with monitors showing real-time security feeds of the estate. On screen one, I watched with my hand pressed over my mouth in absolute terror as Dominic’s guards engaged the intruders in a ferocious firefight across the marble hallways.
And then, camera four flickered to life.

A tall, scarred man wearing a tactical vest—Victor Vance, Dominic’s former second-in-command who had orchestrated the betrayal eleven years ago—stepped through the shattered glass of the front foyer. He had a gun in his hand, and a twisted, sadistic smile on his face.
"Valenti!" Vance roared into the estate's intercom system, his voice echoing through every speaker in the house. "I know you're here! Come out and watch me burn your little kingdom to the ground—starting with your brand-new family!"
