Chapter 2 - The Lion in the Hallway

Dominic Valenti did not merely walk into a room; he commanded it to hold its breath. In the criminal underworld of Chicago, his name was spoken in hushed, reverent whispers. He was a man who had clawed his way to the apex of the city's syndicates through a combination of chilling intellect, absolute ruthlessness, and a survival instinct forged in blood and betrayal. Eleven years ago, a catastrophic betrayal within his inner circle had nearly cost him his life, leaving him scarred, utterly isolated, and completely devoid of warmth. Since then, no one—absolutely no one—approached him without an appointment, a bowed head, and a very good reason.

On this particular afternoon, Dominic had just returned from an intense summit with his regional capos. A phalanx of grim-faced bodyguards in sharp charcoal suits flanked him, their hands resting casually near their concealed holsters. The staff in the main corridor scattered like autumn leaves at his approach, dropping their eyes to the parquet floor. To look Dominic Valenti in the eye was considered an invitation to your own funeral.

Then, the procession ground to a screeching, inexplicable halt.

Dominic raised a single, leather-gloved hand. The entire hallway froze behind him.

Standing dead center in the middle of the polished oak corridor, completely unfazed by the terrifying aura of the men surrounding her, was a toddler. Sophie had managed to slip out of the staff quarters, lured by a stray butterfly that had flown in through a high arched window. In one hand, she clutched Mr. Buttons tightly against her chest; with the other, she was rubbing her sleepy eyes. She looked up, way up, past the expensive Italian leather shoes, past the impeccably tailored black three-piece suit, until her big brown gaze locked onto the cold, ruggedly handsome face of the most feared man in Illinois.

Dominic’s dark eyebrows drew together in a sharp, dangerous frown. His voice, when it cut through the heavy silence, was like grinding stones. "Who are you?"

Sophie didn't flinch. She tilted her head, unimpressed by the bodyguards or the palpable aura of danger. Instead, she lifted both of her tiny arms straight into the air, her face breaking into an expectant, open smile.

"Can you hug me for five minutes?" she asked, her voice crystal clear in the cavernous hall.

Every single guard in the corridor stiffened, hands twitching toward their weapons, waiting for the command to remove the intrusion. Dominic’s expression hardened into stone.

"Five minutes for what?" he demanded, his tone dropping an octave.

"A hug," Sophie replied simply, as if explaining gravity to an idiot.

"Why would you want me to hug you?" Dominic’s eyes narrowed, a mixture of bewilderment and deep suspicion flashing across his features.

Sophie gave Mr. Buttons a reassuring squeeze. "Because I’ve never had a papa hug before."

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the corridor. You could hear the faint ticking of the grandfather clock at the end of the hall. Then, with the devastating, unfiltered honesty only a child possessed, Sophie blinked and added, "And you look like you need one too."
