Chapter 53 - ISABELLA WAS ACCUSED OF BETRAYING A CHILD—BUT THE EVIDENCE POINTED TO SOMEONE EVEN CLOSE

RIsabella Ramirez stood in the center of the library.
She looked exhausted.

For years, she had carried secrets about Sofia's birth, her own disappearance, and the people who had controlled her life.

Now another accusation had arrived.

One that suggested she had betrayed a frightened child.

Sofia watched her mother carefully.

"Did you report Noah's movements to anyone?"

Isabella stared.

"No."

Daniel placed Charles's letter on the table.

"Then why did he suspect you?"

Isabella read it.

Her expression changed.

"Because someone used my name."

Sofia frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Isabella looked up.

"I remember receiving letters from Charles during that period. He asked whether I knew anything about a boy staying at the villa."

"And?"

"I told him I didn't."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did you?"

"No."

Noah stood near the window.

His expression was unreadable.

Isabella looked toward him.

"I would never have sent you back to that place."

Noah nodded slowly.

"I want to believe you."

Isabella's eyes filled.

"I understand."

Sofia refused to turn the conversation into a confrontation without evidence.

The investigators examined Charles's correspondence.

Several letters attributed to Isabella had been typed.

Others carried signatures that appeared inconsistent with her known handwriting.

One envelope had been mailed from a city where Isabella had not lived at the time.

Daniel looked toward the investigator.

"So the letters may have been forged."

"Yes."

"By whom?"

"We don't know yet."

The next clue came from an old security ledger.

A visitor had entered Hawthorne Villa repeatedly during Noah's stay.

The visitor's name was listed as a medical consultant.

DR. H. WARD.

Sofia closed her eyes.

"Helen Ward."

Noah's face hardened.

"She knew where I was."

Daniel nodded.

"Apparently."

The investigator continued.

"There's another detail."

Sofia looked up.

"What?"

"Ward was not entering through the main gate."

"Then how?"

"The west-wing service entrance."

Sofia stared.

The hidden passage.

The same route Noah had used when he returned.

Someone had preserved access to the house for decades.

The following afternoon, investigators searched the passage.

Behind a removable wall panel, they found a small metal compartment.

Inside were old keys, visitor badges, and a notebook.

The notebook contained dates.

Some corresponded to Noah's childhood stay.

Others were recent.

Very recent.

Sofia read the final entry.

Two days earlier.

She looked at Daniel.

"Someone has been using this passage."

Marcus nodded.

"We're checking the security footage."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Whoever it is knows the old layout."

Noah looked toward the wall.

"I used it because Evelyn showed me the entrance years ago."

Sofia turned.

"Evelyn knew about it?"

"Yes."

"Did she tell anyone else?"

Noah hesitated.

"David."

Silence.

David stood near the doorway.

His face changed.

"I haven't used that passage in years."

Daniel looked at him.

"Then someone else may have."

David nodded.

"Yes."

Sofia studied him.

For once, she did not immediately suspect another lie.

He seemed genuinely frightened.

That evening, the investigators recovered a partial fingerprint from the compartment.

It did not match David.

It did not match Isabella.

It did not match Noah.

But it matched someone whose records were already in the Meridian investigation.

A woman named Dr. Miriam Cole.

Sofia frowned.

"Who is she?"

Naomi looked up sharply.

"Miriam worked with Rebecca."

Noah turned.

"At Meridian?"

Naomi nodded.

"She was a pediatric researcher. Rebecca trusted her."

Daniel asked, "Where is she now?"

The investigator hesitated.

"According to the records, she died eighteen years ago."

Sofia stared.

Then laughed once without humor.

"Of course she did."

But the investigator did not smile.

"We have reason to believe the death certificate was falsified."

Noah stepped closer.

"Why?"

"Because someone using her identification entered a medical supply warehouse last month."

Sofia felt cold.

"What did they collect?"

The investigator looked down.

"Archived samples."

"Whose?"

"Rebecca Cross's."

Naomi covered her mouth.

Noah's face became pale.

The investigator continued.

"And there's more."

Daniel folded his arms.

"What?"

"The warehouse surveillance shows the woman meeting another person."

Sofia leaned forward.

"Who?"

The investigator placed a photograph on the screen.

A woman in a dark coat stood beside a parked car.

Her face was partially hidden.

But the second person was clearly visible.

Sofia stared.

Her stomach dropped.

"That can't be right."

Daniel moved closer.

"Who is it?"

Sofia whispered:

"Victoria."

The woman who had once raised a baseball bat over Margaret.

The woman who had left the villa trying to rebuild her life.

The woman who now helped care for Lily.

Sofia looked toward the kitchen.

Victoria was standing in the doorway.

May you like

And she had heard every word.
