Chapter 41 - CLAIRE WAS TOLD HER FATHER WAS A STRANGER—BUT THE CHILDHOOD PHOTO IN DAVID'S HAND PROVED THEY HAD MET BEFORE

Claire had spent most of her life learning that her identity was more complicated than any document could explain.
She had survived Blackwood. She had found Sofia and Victoria. She had begun studying psychology because she wanted to understand what institutions had done to children like her.
But she had never expected David to arrive carrying a photograph from her earliest childhood.
They met in a quiet conference room at the foundation.
Sofia sat beside Claire.
Daniel remained near the window.
David placed the photograph on the table.
Two children stood in a medical corridor.
One was a boy of approximately seven.
The other was a little girl, perhaps four.
Claire picked it up.
"That's me."
David nodded.
"Yes."
She studied the boy.
"Is that you?"
"I think so."
Claire looked at him.
"Why don't you know?"
"Because Evelyn altered our memories through isolation, medication, and repeated conditioning."
Claire's expression hardened.
"Don't tell me what I remember."
David lowered his head.
"You're right."
She looked at the photograph again.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then Claire whispered, "The red door."
David looked up.
"What?"
"There was a red door at the end of the corridor."
David's face changed.
"Yes."
"And somebody used to sing."
David closed his eyes.
"I remember."
Claire's hands trembled.
"I thought I dreamed it."
Sofia touched her shoulder.
"You don't have to keep going."
Claire shook her head.
"I want to."
She looked at David.
"Did you protect me?"
David's eyes filled.
"I tried."
"From what?"
"From the doctors."
Claire stared at him.
David continued.
"Sometimes they took you away for days. When you came back, you wouldn't speak."
Claire lowered the photograph.
"And you?"
"I waited."
Tears filled her eyes.
"Why?"
David's voice broke.
"Because you were the only person who wasn't afraid of me."
The room became silent.
Daniel looked away.
Sofia watched Claire struggle between memory and uncertainty.
Then Claire asked the question everyone feared.
"Was Noah my father?"
David shook his head.
"I don't know."
Sofia spoke gently.
"We won't accept Arthur's claim without evidence."
Claire nodded.
"Good."
But later that afternoon, a new report arrived.
The genetic analysis did not establish Noah as Claire's father.
Instead, it revealed something more troubling.
Several of Claire's archived samples had been mislabeled.
Different samples carried the same identity number.
Someone had combined records from multiple children.
Claire stared at the findings.
"So they didn't even keep our identities separate."
Sofia's expression hardened.
"No."
Daniel approached.
"The laboratory wants new consent-based testing before drawing conclusions."
Claire nodded.
"I'll decide after I speak with my advocate."
Sofia smiled faintly.
"That's your decision."
Then Marcus entered.
"We found the clinic Arthur mentioned."
Sofia stood.
"Where?"
"Outside Harrisburg."
"Is it operating?"
"Yes."
"Under what name?"
Marcus looked down at his phone.
"New Dawn Children's Center."
Claire froze.
Sofia noticed.
"What?"
Claire whispered, "I know that name."
David turned.
"How?"
Claire looked toward the photograph.
"Because the woman behind the red door used to say it."
"Say what?"
Claire's voice became almost inaudible.
"Every child deserves a new dawn."
Sofia felt the old fear return.
Marcus continued.
"The clinic has no registered maternity unit."
Daniel frowned.
"Then why would a newborn be there?"
Marcus's expression darkened.
"Because yesterday, an emergency medical transport arrived."
"Who was inside?"
Marcus looked at Sofia.
"A newborn."
Claire suddenly grabbed the table.
"No."
Sofia turned.
"What?"
Claire stared at the medical center's logo.
A rising sun.
Seven narrow rays.
And beneath it, a tiny black star.
Claire whispered, "That's not a hospital."
Sofia felt her heart tighten.
"What is it?"
Claire looked up.
May you like
"It's where they sent children who failed the tests."
