Chapter 48 - TWO BROTHERS, ONE STOLEN BIRTH RECORD—AND A WOMAN WHO HAD LIED TO BOTH OF THEM

Noah did not move.
Mateo slowly rose from his chair.

For several seconds, the two young men stared at each other across the kitchen.

They looked nothing alike.

Noah was taller, with sharper features and a guarded expression that seemed permanently carved into his face.

Mateo had Luis Ramirez's warm smile, Isabella's dark eyes, and the open manner of someone who had grown up believing that most people deserved a chance.

Yet somewhere inside a decades-old medical archive, their names had appeared on the same birth registration.

Sofia felt a headache forming.

"Nobody says another word until we see the records."

Noah nodded.

Mateo looked confused.

"Why would my name be on his birth certificate?"

"I don't know," Sofia answered.

They returned to the library.

Daniel had already connected the investigators to a large monitor.

A document appeared.

The original registration had been filed under a temporary identification number.

Two names were handwritten in a section marked TRANSFER STATUS.

MATEO RAMIREZ.

NOAH MERCER.

The investigator spoke carefully.

"These are not ordinary birth registrations. They appear to be administrative placement records that were later altered."

Sofia leaned forward.

"So this doesn't establish that they're biological brothers."

"Correct."

Mateo exhaled.

Noah remained silent.

The investigator continued.

"However, both names were connected to the same medical program."

Daniel folded his arms.

"Who authorized the transfers?"

The investigator enlarged the bottom of the document.

A signature appeared.

HELEN WARD.

Sofia stared.

"Of course."

But beneath Ward's signature was another.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

CHARLES HAWTHORNE.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Even after death, Charles seemed capable of entering a room and rearranging everyone's lives.

Sofia looked at Noah.

"Did you know about this?"

Noah hesitated.

"I knew Ward moved children."

"That wasn't my question."

"I knew my name appeared in some of the files."

"And Mateo's?"

Noah lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

Mateo stepped forward.

"You knew about me?"

Noah nodded.

"For years."

"Then why didn't you come find me?"

Noah's face tightened.

"Because I thought you were safe."

Mateo stared.

"You don't get to decide that."

Sofia recognized the words.

She had spoken versions of them herself.

To Gabriel.

To Isabella.

To almost everyone who had claimed that secrecy was a form of love.

Noah looked ashamed.

"You're right."

Mateo stepped back.

"Then tell me what you know."

Noah explained that Ward had operated a placement network for children whose biological origins were difficult to document.

Some were born through conventional pregnancies.

Others were connected to experimental fertility procedures.

Some had been moved between facilities without proper consent or legal oversight.

Noah had discovered the records while trying to escape.

One name had stayed with him.

Mateo Ramirez.

"I saw a photograph," Noah said.

Mateo frowned.

"Of me?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"You were about four."

Sofia felt sick.

"Where was it taken?"

"Outside your elementary school."

Mateo stared.

"You were watching me?"

"No. The photograph was inside Ward's file."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Then someone was monitoring him."

Noah nodded.

"Yes."

The investigator interrupted.

"We need to be careful. A photograph in a file does not establish who took it or why."

Sofia appreciated that.

For too many years, people had treated assumptions as proof.

And children had suffered because of it.

The next morning, independent specialists began examining the archived samples and records.

Sofia accompanied Mateo to the hospital.

Noah chose to come too.

They sat in a private waiting room beneath fluorescent lights.

Mateo looked toward Noah.

"Did you know Evelyn?"

Noah nodded.

"She saved my life."

"David said she took care of you."

"She did."

Mateo hesitated.

"Was she kind?"

Noah looked down.

"She was the first person who asked what I wanted instead of telling me what I was supposed to become."

Mateo nodded.

"Sounds like someone Sofia would like."

Noah almost smiled.

"She did."

Hours passed.

Finally, the laboratory director entered.

The results did not establish that Noah and Mateo were biological siblings.

Their genetic profiles showed no close biological relationship.

Mateo exhaled shakily.

Noah looked almost relieved.

But the director continued.

"There is another issue."

Sofia straightened.

"What issue?"

"One of the archived samples attributed to Mateo does not match his current sample."

Daniel frowned.

"Could the archive have been mislabeled?"

"Yes. That is one possibility."

"Another?"

"The archived material could belong to someone else."

Sofia looked toward Mateo.

"Then we don't make conclusions until we know whose sample it was."

The director nodded.

"Exactly."

That afternoon, investigators searched Ward's former laboratory.

Behind a locked cabinet, they discovered a collection of handwritten notebooks.

Most contained dates, identification numbers, and medical observations.

One notebook was different.

Its cover carried a name.

LUIS RAMIREZ.

Sofia felt her throat tighten when Daniel showed her the photograph.

Her father.

The man who had worked quietly, loved fiercely, and died carrying secrets that seemed determined to outlive him.

Inside the notebook was a handwritten statement.

It had been signed seventeen years earlier.

Daniel read the opening sentence aloud.

"I refused to let them take the child."

Sofia stared.

"What child?"

Daniel turned the page.

His expression changed.

"Sofia..."

"What?"

He looked toward Mateo.

Then Noah.

And whispered:

"Luis wasn't describing either of them."

Sofia's pulse quickened.

"Then who?"

Daniel swallowed.

"The child he rescued was a girl."

A photograph slipped from between the pages.

Sofia picked it up.

A young Luis stood outside a small house.

In his arms was a newborn wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.

On the back, he had written:

HER NAME IS CLAIRE.

Sofia slowly looked toward the doorway.

Claire had just arrived.

May you like

And when she saw the photograph, she began to cry.
