Chapter 26 - The Waterfront Conspiracy

By mid-March, the snow had surrendered to a steady, relentless spring thaw that left the Boston docks shrouded in dense, salty fog. While the boys had fully recovered and returned to dominating their classrooms at St. Sebastian’s, the tension along the South Boston waterfront had reached an unsustainable boiling point.
Arthur Barrett might have been locked in a federal holding facility awaiting trial, but his criminal network had not dissolved—it had simply decentralized. Without old man Barrett’s iron grip, half a dozen rogue syndicates, corrupt longshoremen unions, and lingering Barrett loyalists were attempting to carve out pieces of the lucrative container depots before our clean logistics systems fully took over.
At 11:30 PM, Christian escorted me into the subterranean surveillance bunker beneath our primary terminal at Pier 14. The room was packed with wall-to-wall high-definition monitors displaying live thermal imaging, maritime radar, and real-time biometric tracking feeds of every container entering Massachusetts Bay.
"We have a ghost ship, Dominic," Christian said, tapping a red pulsating blip on the digital marine map. "An unregistered Panamanian cargo vessel, the Santa Maria, slipped past the Coast Guard outer perimeter by piggybacking on the radar wake of an international oil tanker. She’s dropping anchor two miles off Spectacle Island. Thermal scans indicate her hold is packed with heavy industrial crates—and at least thirty armed passengers."
"Who owns the charter?" I asked, watching the pulsating blip move steadily through the shipping channel.
"A shell company registered in the Cayman Islands," Christian replied, pulling up a secondary legal document. "Funded directly by Julian Barrett’s offshore trust fund. The trust was activated yesterday by someone using Sloane Barrett’s biometric authorization key from an unlisted terminal in Montreal."
Sloane.
A cold, humorless smile spread across my face. When I ended our engagement in the conservatory and watched her storm out into the night, I knew she had the vanity and arrogance of a spoiled heiress. But I had underestimated her desperation. Sloane had fled the country when the federal indictments dropped, but she wasn't content to live in exile on her Swiss bank accounts. She wanted revenge. She wanted to prove to Boston high society that the Barrett family could still strike back at the Morettis.
"What is the cargo, Christian?"
"High-grade military armaments and black-market fentanyl shipments," Christian said grimly. "They aren't bringing it in to sell, Dominic. They’re planning to smuggle the crates into our legitimate commercial terminal at Pier 14 tonight, tip off the federal customs task force anonymously, and stage a massive government raid on our facilities tomorrow morning. If thirty tons of contraband are found inside a Moretti depot, the Department of Justice will seize all our maritime licenses and freeze our corporate assets indefinitely. Your clean empire will be dead before it even launches."
It was a brilliantly vicious strategy. It didn't require Sloane’s mercenaries to win a firefight against my men; it simply required them to plant the evidence and let the federal government do their dirty work.
"Where are they landing the tender boats?" I demanded, my eyes narrowing at the digital coastline.
"The old abandoned coal wharf on the south slip," Christian pointed to a blind spot beneath the rusted industrial cranes where the water was shallow and unmonitored by the harbor police. "In twenty minutes."
I pulled on my black tactical gloves, securing the velcro strap at my wrists. "Call Uncle Vincenzo. Tell him to bring Renaldo and Ricci’s crews down to the slip. If those old dock captains want to prove they still have a place in this family, tonight is their audition. But no automatic fire, and no dead bodies on the wharf."
May you like
Christian raised an eyebrow, surprised. "No dead bodies, Boss?"
"A dead mercenary invites a federal homicide investigation," I said, checking the magazine of my suppressed sidearm. "We take them alive, seize the manifests, and hand Sloane’s little invasion fleet directly to the United States Coast Guard with a neat red bow. Let the federal prosecutors bury the Barrett name once and for all."
