Chapter 20 - The Future of the Empire

On New Year’s Eve, a soft, powdery snow began to blanket the city of Boston, turning the historic streets of Back Bay into a winter wonderland. From the high terrace of the brownstone, the lights of the harbor shimmered like scattered diamonds across the frozen water.

The house was finally quiet. Downstairs, Uncle Vincenzo and the guards had retired after a lavish celebratory dinner. In their massive bedroom down the hall, Leo, Dante, Marco, and Mateo were fast asleep, tucked beneath identical navy quilts, their four miniature leather jackets hung neatly on the back of their bedroom chairs.

I stood out on the stone terrace, dressed in a warm wool sweater, leaning against the wrought-iron railing with a glass of vintage scotch in hand. The city beneath me was peaceful, humming with the quiet optimism of a new year.

The glass French doors clicked open softly, and Elena stepped onto the terrace, wrapped in a thick white faux-fur shawl. She walked over, sliding her arms around my torso and resting her head against my chest, her warmth cutting right through the crisp winter air.

"Thinking about the empire, Mr. Moretti?" she murmured, looking up at me with those mesmerizing hazel eyes.

"No," I answered softly, setting my glass on the stone ledge and wrapping both arms securely around her. "I was thinking about how empty this balcony was for six years. I used to stand out here every New Year's Eve, looking at the fireworks over the harbor, wondering where you were. Wondering if you were cold, or lonely, or if you had forgotten me."

Elena reached up, her thumb gently tracing the sharp line of my jaw, resting on the small scar near my temple.

"I never forgot you, Dominic," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Not for a single second. Every time I looked at those four boys, I saw your face, your stubbornness, and your heart. I kept them safe so that when the day finally came for you to find us, I could give you back everything you thought you lost."

"You gave me more than I ever deserved, Elena," I said, leaning down to press my forehead against hers. "You gave me a reason to be a better man. The Moretti syndicate won't be built on violence and fear anymore. We're transitioning all our maritime holdings to clean, legitimate commercial logistics. For our sons. So they can walk into any boardroom in this country with their heads held high, proud of their name."

A sudden burst of brilliant emerald and gold fireworks exploded over the Charles River, lighting up the midnight sky and reflecting in Elena's eyes.

From the bedroom inside, the sound of scurrying bare feet echoed across the hardwood floor. A second later, the French doors flew open, and four sleepy, excited little boys in flannel pajamas tumbled out onto the terrace.

"Happy New Year!" all four yelled in unison, jumping into our legs.

I laughed, picking up Mateo and Leo in my arms while Elena knelt down to wrap Dante and Marco in her shawl. The fireworks continued to cascade across the Boston skyline, illuminating six identical sets of hazel and dark eyes, all looking forward toward a bright, unwritten future.

Six years of darkness, distance, and fear were finally behind us. The bloodline was secure, the empire was thriving, and the mirror image of our love was standing right beside us, ready to conquer the world together.
