Chapter 8 - Blood and Bail

The central municipal courthouse was swarming with hundreds of broadcast journalists and flashing camera crews.

Inside Courtroom 4B, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense beneath the vaulted mahogany ceiling.

Vanessa Ashford sat at the defense table, her aristocratic glamour completely shattered by thirty-six hours of incarceration.

She wore a wrinkled orange prison jumpsuit, her blonde hair tangled and unwashed, her wrists shackled to a waist chain.

Her mother, Margaret, sat three seats down, wearing the same hideous orange garb, her face bruised and weeping into a paper towel.

Across the aisle, Richard Ashford sat slouched between two armed sheriff’s deputies, staring blankly at the floor.

Vanessa kept twisting her head toward the back doors, searching desperately for her high-powered political savior.

“Where is Uncle Julian?” Vanessa hissed at her defense attorney, her manicured nails digging into the wooden table.

“He promised he would have the state attorney general dismiss these bogus charges before breakfast!”

“Miss Ashford, keep your voice down,” her exhausted public defender whispered anxiously.

“The Vance legal team filed forty-two new counts of federal grand larceny twenty minutes ago.”

The heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open with a dramatic bang.

The entire gallery turned as Daniel Vance strode down the center aisle, exuding absolute aristocratic authority in a midnight-navy suit.

Beside him walked Emily Vance, radiating breathtaking elegance in a tailored emerald silk blazer and black trousers.

Behind them marched Evelyn Cross, flanked by three junior associates carrying heavy, sealed evidence cartons.

Vanessa gasped, her eyes bulging with unadulterated hatred as she watched the girl she had slapped walking like royalty.

“You!” Vanessa shrieked, rattling her chains as she attempted to lunge across the wooden railing.

“You pathetic little maid! How dare you show your face in here!”

“Silence in the court!” Judge Eleanor Vance-Holloway slammed her heavy wooden gavel, the crack echoing like a gunshot.

“One more outburst from the defense table, Miss Ashford, and you will be gagged and removed to a holding cell!”

Vanessa sank back into her seat, trembling with fury while glaring at Emily with murderous intensity.

Judge Holloway adjusted her half-moon spectacles, looking down at the massive docket of criminal charges.

“We are here for the emergency bail hearing in the matter of State versus Richard, Margaret, and Vanessa Ashford,” the judge stated.

“The defense has petitioned for immediate release on personal recognizance, citing high social standing and lack of flight risk.”

Evelyn Cross stepped forward to the prosecution podium, her demeanor sharp, precise, and utterly lethal.

“Your Honor, the State strongly opposes bail in any amount,” Evelyn announced, projecting her voice through the courtroom speakers.

“Less than two hours ago, Vance Global investigators, operating under federal warrant, recovered the primary shadow ledgers of Ashford Shipping.”

Evelyn gestured toward the evidence boxes, where junior attorneys produced the pristine leather ledger and encrypted drives.

“These records prove beyond all doubt that the Ashford family embezzled over one hundred million dollars from the late Thomas Vance.”

“Furthermore, we have hard evidence proving that Richard Ashford had secured chartered flights to a non-extradition country for tonight.”

Richard lowered his head, groaning in despair as his last desperate escape plan evaporated into thin air.

Margaret began sobbing uncontrollably, clutching her daughter’s shackled arm.

“Vanessa, do something!” Margaret wailed. “Call your uncle! Tell Julian to stop this nightmare!”

At that precise moment, the courtroom side door opened, and a state judicial liaison stepped forward with an urgent document.

The liaison handed the sealed paper directly to Judge Holloway, who reviewed the text with a stern, impassive expression.

“This court has just received a formal public declaration from the office of Senator Julian Sterling,” Judge Holloway announced.

Vanessa’s eyes lit up with sudden, hysterical hope, a vile triumphant smile twitching across her pale lips.

“You see?” Vanessa sneered across the aisle at Emily. “My uncle is going to destroy you all!”

Judge Holloway cleared her throat, her stern voice ringing across the silent room.

“Senator Julian Sterling has formally announced that he has severed all personal and professional ties with the Ashford family.”

Vanessa’s smile froze, turning into a horrific mask of paralyzing shock.

“The Senator states,” Judge Holloway continued reading, “that he was completely unaware of the disgraceful conduct of his niece.”

“He condemns their actions in the strongest possible terms and urges the court to apply the maximum penalties of the law.”

“Furthermore, Senator Sterling has requested the State Ethics Board to launch an independent audit into any campaign funds connected to Richard Ashford.”

“No!” Vanessa screamed at the top of her lungs, rising violently from her chair as her chains clattered wildly.

“He’s lying! Uncle Julian took eighty million dollars! He helped my father forge the wills! He told me to treat that maid like dirt!”

Judge Holloway slammed the gavel three times with thunderous force.

“Bail is denied for all three defendants!” Judge Holloway ruled without a shred of hesitation.

“Richard Ashford, Margaret Ashford, and Vanessa Ashford will be remanded to the County Maximum Security Facility pending trial.”

Court officers moved in immediately, clamping heavy iron cuffs around Vanessa’s arms and dragging her toward the holding cells.

Vanessa thrashed against the deputies, tears streaming down her face, screaming like a lunatic toward the gallery.

“Daniel! Please! Look at me!” Vanessa begged, her voice breaking into pathetic, desperate shrieks.

“I love you! We were supposed to be married! You can't let them put me in a cage with criminals!”

Daniel sat completely motionless in his chair, his eyes colder than glacial ice, refusing to offer her a single glance.

Emily stood tall beside her brother, her hazel eyes meeting Vanessa’s crazed, tear-streaked gaze with absolute moral dominance.

“You told me people like me don't get to make mistakes,” Emily said softly, her words carrying clearly across the quiet courtroom.

“Now you’re going to find out what happens when people like you have to pay for theirs.”

Vanessa screamed in impotent fury as the heavy metal cell doors slammed shut behind her, sealing her fate forever.

Outside in the hallway, Evelyn Cross turned toward Daniel and Emily, her tablet chiming with breaking political news.

“Senator Sterling is hosting a live gubernatorial campaign gala at the Grand Plaza tonight,” Evelyn reported with a grim smile.

“He thinks throwing his family to the wolves saved his political career.”

Daniel stood up, fastening the button of his suit jacket with deadly composure.

“Then let’s go attend the Senator’s victory party,” Daniel said.

“It’s time to deliver the final invoice.”
