Chapter 10 - The Crown Reclaimed

The morning sun broke over the city skyline, bathing the ninety-fifth floor of Vance Global in brilliant, warm amber light.

The executive boardroom was filled with senior partners, international banking directors, and the entire corporate legal division.

At the head of the seventy-foot mahogany conference table sat Daniel Vance, looking across at his sister with unmistakable pride.

Evelyn Cross placed a thick leather portfolio before Emily, opening it to reveal the finalized federal restitution agreements.

“All frozen offshore accounts have been successfully repatriated under the Vance Global corporate umbrella,” Evelyn reported.

“The eighty million dollars stolen from your personal trust has been returned with full statutory interest, totaling one hundred and twelve million.”

“Richard Ashford has accepted a plea agreement of twenty-five years in federal penitentiary without possibility of parole.”

“Margaret Ashford has been sentenced to twelve years for conspiracy, fraud, and felony assault.”

“And Senator Julian Sterling has been formally expelled from the Senate and remanded to federal custody awaiting multiple racketeering trials.”

Daniel reached into his jacket pocket, withdrawing an antique fountain pen crafted from gold and onyx—their father’s pen.

He placed it gently into Emily’s hand, his fingers closing warmly over hers.

“Sign the final restructuring charter, Emily,” Daniel said, his voice thick with deep, enduring affection.

“From this moment forward, you are officially Co-Chairwoman of Vance Global Enterprises.”

Emily looked down at the document, her hazel eyes filling with tears that she no longer had to hide.

She took a deep, steadying breath, pressing the gold nib to the parchment and writing her full legal name: Emily Vance.

The entire boardroom erupted into thunderous, respectful applause from every executive and director in the room.

Two hours later, Daniel and Emily arrived at the St. Jude Private Neurological Institute in the countryside.

They walked down the sunlit, quiet corridor toward Room 402, where a private medical team stood waiting respectfully.

Inside the private suite, surrounded by fresh flowers and state-of-the-art medical equipment, sat Emily’s mother, Sarah.

Sarah looked frail, but her eyes were clear and alert, the color having returned to her cheeks after forty-eight hours of specialized care.

When Sarah saw Emily walk through the door, tears spilled over her lashes as she opened her arms.

“Mom,” Emily choked out, rushing forward and throwing her arms around her mother’s shoulders.

“Oh, my sweet girl,” Sarah wept softly, running her fingers through Emily’s hair.

“They told me what you did… they told me how you fought for us…”

Daniel stepped into the room, bowing his head with deep humility before his late father’s second wife.

“You will never have to worry about a medical bill or a roof over your head ever again, Sarah,” Daniel promised softly.

“You are family, and Vance family takes care of its own.”

Sarah reached out with a trembling hand, taking Daniel’s palm and pressing it against her cheek with profound gratitude.

“Thomas would be so proud of you both,” Sarah whispered. “He always knew you two would protect each other.”

By late afternoon, Daniel’s black Maybach pulled up outside the gate of the County Maximum Security Correctional Facility.

Emily stepped out alone, carrying only a small manila folder, walking through the reinforced security gates into the visitor wing.

Behind the thick plexiglass partition sat Vanessa Ashford, looking utterly unrecognizable in her coarse, ill-fitting orange uniform.

Her once-luxurious blonde hair was chopped short, her skin pale and sallow, her manicured nails broken and raw.

Vanessa picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver, her hand trembling violently as she stared at Emily.

Emily sat down on the metal stool, lifting her receiver to her ear with calm, composed grace.

“Did you come here to gloat?” Vanessa spat, though her voice lacked its former venom, sounding hollow, broken, and defeated.

“I came here to give you this,” Emily said, pressing a single photograph against the glass partition.

It was a photograph of the St. Regis ballroom cake table, pristine and untouched before Vanessa had violently shoved the tray.

“My entire life, people like you looked at me and saw someone disposable,” Emily said, her tone steady and quiet.

“You thought you could slap me, humiliate me, and throw my dignity onto the floor because you held all the cards.”

“Look where your arrogance brought you, Vanessa.”

Vanessa stared at the photo, then looked down at her own calloused, dirty hands, fresh tears welling in her eyes.

“They have me cleaning the grease traps in the prison cafeteria,” Vanessa sobbed, her voice cracking in utter misery.

“Twelve hours a day on my knees scrubbing floors with a wire brush.”

“Then you finally know what honest work feels like,” Emily replied without an ounce of pity.

Emily placed the receiver back onto its cradle, stood up, and turned her back on Vanessa Ashford forever.

She walked out into the crisp evening air, where Daniel stood waiting beside the car, looking out over the shining city below.

The sun was setting behind the Vance Global tower, painting the glass and steel in triumphant shades of gold and crimson.

Daniel opened the passenger door, offering his sister a warm, genuine smile that erased years of separation and pain.

“Where to now, Co-Chairwoman?” Daniel asked, his eyes gleaming with pride.

Emily smiled, looking out toward the endless horizon of the city they now commanded together.

“Let’s go home, Daniel,” Emily said, stepping into the car with her head held high.

“We have a company to run.”
