Chapter 3 - The Bill Comes Due

Two female security officers moved forward with swift, professional detachment.

Before Vanessa could protest, they firmly unpinned the ten-carat heirloom diamond brooch pinned to her bodice.

Vanessa shrieked, slapping at their hands, but Chief Vance stepped in between them with a hand resting upon his utility belt.

“Resisting will result in immediate criminal assault charges, Miss Ashford,” Chief Vance warned in a monotone drone.

With trembling hands, Margaret attempted to hide her designer diamond bracelet beneath her sleeve.

“This is private property!” Margaret barked, her voice shaking violently as a guard cleanly unclasped the band from her wrist.

“Daniel Vance, you will hear from our lawyers before the sun comes up!”

“Your lawyers are already busy, Margaret,” a calm, icy voice called out from the back of the room.

A tall woman in a bespoke pinstriped suit strode through the crowd, carrying a pair of heavy leather briefcases.

It was Evelyn Cross, the senior managing partner of Cross & Vance Legal, the most feared corporate litigation firm on the coast.

Evelyn walked straight to Daniel, offering a brief, respectful nod before opening the first folder.

“Good evening, Mr. Vance,” Evelyn said, turning toward Richard Ashford with a predatory smile.

“While you were in the foyer, my forensic accounting team concluded the emergency audit of Ashford Maritime Logistics.”

Richard grabbed the edge of a standing candelabra, his knees clearly buckling beneath him.

“You had no legal authorization to audit my private holdings!” Richard shouted, sweat pouring down his temples.

“As the holder of seventy-five percent of your company’s convertible corporate bonds, Mr. Vance has absolute oversight,” Evelyn countered coolly.

She pulled three thick packets of documents from her bag, tossing them onto the marble floor right at Richard’s feet.

“Three years ago, you forged the signature of the late Thomas Vance to transfer four commercial warehouses in the harbor to your personal shell corporation.”

“You evicted Emily Vance from her registered trust home using an invalidated power of attorney.”

“And over the past six months, you siphoned eight million dollars of Daniel’s wedding development funds to pay off your illicit gambling debts in Macau.”

The entire ballroom gasped in synchrony.

Several business associates who had sat at the VIP tables immediately stood up and walked away, pulling out their phones to cancel contracts.

The facade of the prestigious Ashford dynasty had crumbled in less than ten minutes.

Vanessa looked at her father in sheer horror.

“Dad… what is she talking about? You told me our company was expanding!”

“Shut up, Vanessa!” Richard hissed, his aristocratic facade evaporating into raw desperation.

Daniel did not even flinch at the chaos.

He turned to Emily, whose hand remained gripped in his own.

“Emily, do you know what this hotel is called?” Daniel asked gently.

Emily looked around at the towering marble pillars, the gold leaf ceilings, and the sea of elites staring at her with reverence and fear.

“The Grand St. Regis…” she whispered, her voice still trembling.

“My holding company bought it six months ago,” Daniel said, his voice ringing clearly across every table.

“And under our father’s original will, fifty percent of all hospitality acquisitions belong entirely to you.”

The air left Vanessa’s lungs in a violent sob.

The maid she had struck across the face was not just the groom’s sister.

She was the co-owner of the very ground Vanessa was standing on.

Arthur Sterling stepped forward, holding a silver keycard and a black velvet case.

“Miss Vance,” Arthur said with deep humility, bowing low before the girl in the stained uniform.

“On behalf of the entire management staff, we beg your forgiveness for this unforgivable breach of safety.”

“Your personal penthouse suite has been prepared on the eighty-fifth floor.”

“The private elevator is secured, and five-star medical staff are waiting upstairs to treat your cheek.”

Emily looked from the luxurious silver key to the dented serving tray on the floor.

She looked at Vanessa, who was now on her knees, desperately trying to gather her ruined veil.

“Take off the dress,” Emily said quietly.

The words were soft, but they carried the force of an executioner’s axe.

Vanessa looked up, her tear-stained face pale with disbelief.

“What did you say?”

Emily took one deliberate step forward, her posture transforming from a cowering servant into an undisputed heiress.

“You told me people like me don’t get to make mistakes in front of you,” Emily said, her hazel eyes blazing with cold clarity.

“That dress was bought with my brother’s money, which means it was bought with my family’s trust.”

“You are wearing my father’s legacy while you kick my father’s daughter.”

“Take it off.”

The guests erupted into mutters of shock, but nobody dared challenge her command.

“You can’t make me strip in a public ballroom!” Vanessa cried hysterically, clutching her gown.

“You have sixty seconds to step into the cloakroom and change into hotel robes,” Daniel commanded with bone-chilling authority.

“Or my security staff will cut the fabric off your back right where you sit.”

Margaret rushed forward, trying to pull her daughter up, but Chief Vance immediately blocked her path.

“Time is ticking, Miss Ashford,” Chief Vance barked.

Weeping uncontrollably, clutching the shredded lace against her chest, Vanessa scrambled to her feet and fled toward the side dressing room, flanked by two armed guards.

Richard attempted to slip through the side exit toward the valet parking, but Evelyn Cross stepped smoothly into his way.

“Where are you going, Richard?” Evelyn smiled coldly.

“Two detectives from the State Fraud Bureau are waiting for you in the lobby.”

“Your accounts have been frozen, your yacht has been impounded, and by midnight, your shipping firm will be declared insolvent.”

Richard sank against the wall, staring at the floor as his entire life collapsed into absolute ruins.

Daniel turned his back on the pathetic scene, taking off his custom velvet tuxedo jacket and gently draping it over Emily’s bruised shoulders.

“Come on, Emily,” Daniel whispered softly into her ear.

“Let’s go home.”
