Chapter 6 - The Cellar of Secrets

Deep beneath the stone foundations of the Vance estate, the air was cold, damp, and smelled of aging oak barrels and earth.

Victoria Sterling sat on the freezing concrete floor, her sequined gown shredded at the seams.

Her hands were still bound tightly behind her back by Boris’s industrial zip-ties.

She kicked her legs frantically against an iron rack of vintage Bordeaux, sending expensive bottles crashing down around her.

Red wine pooled like blood across the dark floor, soaking into the hem of her designer dress.

“Let me out of here!” Victoria shrieked into the darkness.

“Marcus! You bastard! You can’t keep me in a basement! This is kidnapping!”

The heavy iron-reinforced door at the top of the cellar stairs creaked open with a slow, ominous groan.

Footsteps descended the stone steps, slow, rhythmic, and heavy.

Marcus Vance appeared in the dim amber light of the cellar lanterns, looking down at his former fiancée with utter disgust.

Behind him walked two federal agents in dark windbreakers bearing the yellow letters of the FBI.

Victoria scrambled backward against the brick wall, her face smeared with sweat, wine, and running mascara.

“Marcus! Tell these men to untie me! We can settle this privately!” she pleaded, her voice trembling.

Marcus stopped five feet from her, folding his arms across his broad chest.

“There is no private settlement for treason, attempted murder, and corporate espionage, Victoria.”

Special Agent Miller, a stern-faced veteran with twenty years on the organized crime desk, stepped forward.

He held a thick leather binder containing dozens of freshly printed wiretap transcripts.

“Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder against Evelyn Vance,” Agent Miller recited coldly.

“You are also being charged with multiple counts of wire fraud, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice in connection with the Arthur Hayes homicide investigation.”

Victoria shook her head violently, her blonde hair sticking to her wet cheeks.

“No! You don’t understand! My father forced me into this! He told me the Vance family was going to ruin us!”

Marcus knelt down in front of her, his eyes locking onto hers with terrifying clarity.

“Your father didn’t force you to mix potassium cyanide into my mother’s tea, Victoria.”

“Your father didn’t raise a silver bat over a seventy-five-year-old woman in a wheelchair.”

“You did that all on your own, driven by the pathetic greed that has defined your entire worthless life.”

Marcus leaned closer, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper that made Victoria’s stomach drop.

“And here is the piece of news that will haunt you for the rest of your twenty-five-year sentence.”

Victoria stared at him, terrified of what could possibly be worse than what she was already facing.

“The prenuptial agreement you signed last month?” Marcus asked with a cold smirk.

“There was a morality clause buried on page eighty-four, drafted by my father before he passed.”

“Any party convicted of a felony against a member of the Vance family forfeits one hundred percent of their personal assets to the victim.”

Victoria’s jaw dropped in sheer, paralyzing horror.

“My penthouse… my trust fund… my jewelry collection…” she stammered.

“Every single cent of your personal fortune has just been transferred into a trust fund managed by Clara Hayes,” Marcus stated coldly.

“The very girl you tried to have beaten like a dog on my lawn now owns your home, your cars, and your bank accounts.”

“You will enter Danbury Federal Correctional Institution with exactly zero dollars to your name.”

Victoria let out an ear-piercing scream of pure, unadulterated madness.

She tried to lunge at Marcus with her teeth bared, but Agent Miller and his partner seized her by the shoulders.

They hauled her to her feet as she thrashed violently, her designer heels scraping uselessly against the stone floor.

“I’ll kill her! I’ll kill that maid! I’ll tear her throat out!” Victoria shrieked, her sanity completely shattering.

Agent Miller slammed her against the wall, applying steel handcuffs behind her back before cutting away the plastic ties.

“Watch your mouth, prisoner, before we add terroristic threats to your indictment,” Miller barked into her ear.

They dragged Victoria up the stone stairs, her screams fading down the corridor until the heavy oak door slammed shut once more.

Marcus stood in the quiet cellar for a long moment, looking down at the shattered wine bottles on the floor.

The poison that had infected his family’s legacy for fifteen years had finally been purged.

He turned and climbed the stairs back toward the light, ready to rebuild what had been broken.
