Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Blueprint

The revelation hung in the stifling Hamptons air like the heavy blade of a guillotine.

Victoria’s screams echoed against the glass facade of the mansion, but nobody moved to assist her.

The high-society elite backed away in disgusted realization, murmuring among themselves like disturbed hornets.

They had spent years groveling at Victoria’s feet, begging for invitations to her exclusive galas.

Now they saw her for what she truly was: a murderous grifter on the verge of total annihilation.

Marcus turned his gaze toward Clara, his eyes softening by a fraction of a degree.

“How long have you had that drive, Miss Hayes?” he asked, his voice steady and calm.

“Since six o'clock this morning,” Clara replied, stepping forward without a hint of hesitation.

“I saw her mixing the white powder in the greenhouse yesterday evening behind the orchid racks.”

“I didn’t know what it was at first, but I knew she was hiding something deadly from Mrs. Vance.”

“When she left her safe unlocked to scream at the chef, I copied her drive and took the vial from her vanity.”

Victoria clutched her head in both hands, rocking back and forth on the wet stone.

“You stole my property! That’s corporate theft! Marcus, that evidence is inadmissible in court!”

Marcus let out a short, mocking chuckle that cut through Victoria’s panic like a straight razor.

“This isn’t a state courtroom, Victoria; this is Vance territory.”

“And the contents of that drive have already been mirrored to seven private servers across three different continents.”

Marcus took the thumb drive from Clara’s hand and plugged it into a port on the side of his smartphone.

Within seconds, the outdoor television screens shifted from the news broadcast to a series of scanned medical reports.

High-resolution images of autopsy documents from fifteen years ago illuminated the patio.

The name *Arthur Hayes* was stamped in bold red ink across the top of the coroner’s summary.

Beneath the charred remains section was a toxicology report that had been suppressed by the city coroner for over a decade.

Arthur Hayes had not died from smoke inhalation; he had been injected with a massive dose of succinylcholine before the blaze was ignited.

The paralyzed engineer had been burned alive while fully conscious in his own research facility.

Clara gasped, a sharp hand flying to her mouth as the horrific reality of her father's final moments washed over her.

Tears finally escaped her emerald eyes, tracking down her dust-smudged cheeks.

Evelyn Vance reached up from her wheelchair, pulling Clara down into a fierce, protective embrace.

“My poor sweet girl… your father was the most honorable man who ever worked for this family,” Evelyn wept.

“My late husband tried to protect him, but Richard Sterling had already bought off the entire police precinct.”

Victoria looked up, her face twisted in a sneer of pure venomous hatred.

“He was an arrogant peasant who thought he could lecture my father on ethics!” Victoria spat, completely dropping her facade.

“He deserved to burn! And his little charity-case daughter should have starved in the gutter where she belongs!”

The words had barely left Victoria’s lips when Marcus stepped forward with terrifying speed.

The air cracked as his shadow eclipsed her completely.

He didn’t strike her; he simply leaned down until his eyes were two inches from hers.

The raw, murderous intent radiating from the billionaire was so intense that Victoria literally choked on her own breath.

“If you speak another word in Arthur Hayes's name, I will ensure you spend the rest of your life in a supermax solitary cell.”

Victoria swallowed hard, her teeth clicking together as an uncontrollable shiver seized her spine.

Marcus straightened up and addressed the crowd of silent, terrified guests.

“The party is over,” Marcus announced, his voice carrying the authority of an absolute monarch.

“You will all leave your phones with my security team at the gate for forensic wiping.”

“If a single word of this afternoon’s events leaks to the press before my press conference at six, your companies will be shorted into bankruptcy by sunrise.”

Nobody argued.

Billionaires, supermodels, and foreign diplomats began scurrying toward the exits like frightened mice.

They dropped their crystal glasses on the grass, eager to escape the epicenter of the Vance family purge.

Within five minutes, the massive courtyard was empty of guests, leaving only the family, Clara, and the armed guards.

Marcus looked down at Victoria, who was now trembling violently against the foot of the marble pillar.

“Boris,” Marcus said, not even turning his head toward the chauffeur who was still sweating near the hedges.

“Boss?” the mercenary responded, his voice quivering.

“Bind Miss Sterling’s hands with zip-ties and put her in the wine cellar until the federal marshals arrive.”

Boris didn’t hesitate for a second to betray his former employer.

He pulled a set of heavy plastic restraints from his belt and moved toward Victoria with purposeful strides.

“Boris! No! I pay you three hundred thousand a year!” Victoria shrieked, kicking wildly with her stilettos.

Boris grabbed her ankles, swept her legs out from under her, and snapped the zip-ties around her wrists in three seconds flat.

As Victoria was dragged across the manicured lawn toward the cellar doors, her manicured fingers clawed frantically at the earth.

“Marcus! You can’t do this to me! I’m a Sterling! You need our political connections!” she wailed.

The heavy wooden cellar door slammed shut, cutting off her hysterical cries in an instant.

Silence descended over the terrace, broken only by the sound of the Atlantic waves crashing against the cliffs below.
