Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Petersons

Over the next three weeks, the Peterson family empire collapsed like a house of cards built on wet sand.
Without the fifty-two million dollars from the Vance Syndicate, Peterson Financial Group failed to meet its net capital requirements under federal regulatory guidelines. Their primary bank froze their operating accounts, forcing Frank to initiate emergency liquidation proceedings to avoid personal bankruptcy.
To make matters worse, Harrison’s forensic audit revealed that Megan Peterson had diverted over $180,000 in corporate marketing funds over three years to pay for personal luxury trips, designer clothes, and her private spa memberships—carefully disguising the invoices as "client entertainment expenses."
Facing corporate fraud charges, Megan was forced to resign in disgrace, her reputation in the Chicago financial community utterly destroyed.
On a cold Tuesday in mid-December, I met my attorney, Leo, at his office downtown to review the final settlement proposal submitted by Mark’s legal team.
Mark had surrendered completely.
He agreed to sole physical custody for me, supervised visitation rights for himself every other weekend, generous child support terms, and a complete waiver of any claim to my pre-marital assets or my family’s trust funds. He didn't have the money to fight a legal war—his high-salaried VP position at his father's firm was gone, and he was currently living in a rented one-bedroom apartment in the suburbs, driving a ten-year-old used sedan.
Leo slid the final decree across the desk toward me.
"He signed everything, Chloe," Leo said gently. "You are completely free."
I picked up the pen, feeling its weight in my fingers. For a second, a flash of memory passed through my mind—the quiet evening seven years ago when Mark and I had stood in a small chapel in Ohio, promising to love and protect each other.

He had promised to protect me. But when the moment came, he had chosen the comfort of his toxic family over the safety of his own child.
I pressed the pen to the paper and signed my name firmly across the bottom line: Chloe Vance.
