Chapter 11 - The New Horizon

On New Year's Eve, three weeks later, I stood on the balcony of my new home—a stunning, light-filled loft in the West Loop that I had purchased using my independent savings and trust funds.
The snow was falling softly over the skyline of Chicago, dusting the roofs and streets in pristine white. Inside, the fireplace crackled, warming the living room where Zoe, Leo, and a few of our closest, truest friends were gathered, laughing and pouring champagne.
Lily was asleep upstairs in her new bedroom, surrounded by her books, her quilt, and a room painted in her favorite shade of soft lavender.
My phone chimed on the balcony railing.
It was a text from Uncle Harrison in Arizona:
“Happy New Year, Chloe. The new syndicate portfolio has been transferred to your independent financial consultancy firm. You are now the principal manager. Show them how a Vance runs things.”
I smiled, holding the phone against my chest, feeling a deep, unshakeable warmth spread through my body.
For seven years, I had been Chloe Peterson—the quiet, accommodating wife who stayed in the background, making excuses for people who didn't deserve my grace.

Tonight, under the glowing lights of a new year, I was Chloe Vance.
I looked up at the endless winter sky, pulled my coat around my shoulders, and stepped back inside toward the warmth, the laughter, and the bright, unyielding future that was entirely my own.
