Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Office

"Chloe, wait!" Mark sobbed into the phone. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I should have defended you! I should have stopped Megan! I was stupid! I was scared of my parents!"
"You weren't scared, Mark," I corrected him. "You were comfortable. You liked letting your family walk all over me because it kept the peace for you."
"Please, Chloe!" he cried out, putting his hands together in a desperate prayer gesture on the camera. "We will lose the house! The firm will go into receivership by Monday! Megan is facing an internal audit for marketing funds—they're talking about fraud charges!"
"Actions have consequences, Mark," I said. "You taught me that yesterday when you locked the door."
"I didn't lock the door! Frank locked it!"
"And you stood there and watched him do it," I said flatly. "Leo, give him the formal notice."
Leo leaned into the camera frame, holding up an official legal document stamped by the Cook County Circuit Court.
"Mark Peterson," Leo said in a booming, authoritative voice. "You are hereby served with a formal Petition for Dissolution of Marriage, an emergency motion for sole legal and physical custody of Lily Vance-Peterson, and an immediate temporary restraining order barring you, Megan Peterson, Carol Peterson, and Frank Peterson from approaching within five hundred feet of Chloe or her child."
"No... no, please, Chloe..." Mark stammered, tears streaming down his cheeks. "Don't do this to our family!"
"You destroyed our family yesterday at 5:15 PM," I said. "Goodbye, Mark."
I disconnected the call and immediately blocked his number, along with every single member of the Peterson family.
Twenty minutes later, Zoe’s building security called up to the penthouse.
"Ms. Vance?" the concierge said over the intercom. "There is a gentleman in the lobby named Frank Peterson, along with a woman named Carol. They are demanding to see you. They are causing a significant disturbance."
Zoe stepped over to the intercom, her voice crisp and dark. "Security, please hand Mr. Peterson the court injunction that was delivered to your desk ten minutes ago, and inform him that if he does not clear the lobby in sixty seconds, the Chicago Police Department will arrest him for felony harassment."
Through the penthouse window, forty stories up, I looked down at the bustling streets of Michigan Avenue. The city was glowing with holiday lights, shoppers carrying colorful bags, cars streaming past under the crisp blue sky.

For seven years, I had shrunk myself to fit into the Peterson family’s small, fragile, arrogant world. I had let them make me feel insignificant.
Now, looking down at the world from forty floors above, I realized how tiny they truly were.
