Chapter 19 - The Matriarch Returns: Glass, Fire, and the Stolen Scalpel

"How poetic, David. You always were the smartest of my lab rats."
The voice didn't come from a megaphone. It didn't come from a walkie-talkie.
It came from the dark doorway of the bedroom.
David and Leah spun around simultaneously.
Standing in the smoke, framed by the burning frame of the staircase, was the true Victoria Miller.
She wore no fur coat. She wore the blood-spattered green scrubs of Nurse Sarah Collins, loosely draped over her emaciated, skeletal frame. Her real hair was shaved down to gray bristles, exposing the bulging blue veins along her wrinkled temples. Her eyes were sunken, rimmed with dark, bruised circles of late-stage terminal illness, but burning with a demonic, feverish intensity.
In her right hand, she held a heavy nine-millimeter automatic pistol. In her left, she held a titanium bone-marrow aspiration trocar—a massive, thick-gauge needle designed to bore into the pelvis.
Behind her, two towering private contractors wearing night-vision goggles stood watch, their assault rifles leveled at David’s chest.
"Put the gun down, David," Victoria whispered, her voice a dry, rasping hiss like dry leaves scraping across concrete. "You shoot me, my men turn you and your pathetic commoner wife into red mist. And I still walk out of here with my marrow."
David stood slowly, placing himself directly between Victoria’s weapon and the bed where Leah shielded Noah.
"You're a monster," David whispered. "You killed your own child."
"I *created* Julian!" Victoria snapped, her face twisting into a hideous mask of aristocratic fury. "He was my property! His marrow belonged to me! My fortune, my empire, my genius kept this family godlike while the rest of the world rotted in mediocrity! And you... you ungrateful, mediocre little coward... you thought you could liquidate my life’s work to pay restitution to the weak?!"
Victoria stepped into the room, her slippers crunching over the shattered glass.
"You took eighty million dollars of my money. But biology, David... biology is an absolute dictator. Noah belongs to me."
Victoria gestured with the trocar needle. "Hand him over, Leah. Hand me my grandson, and I will let David bleed out quickly. Refuse me, and I will extract the marrow from that child while you both watch with your eyes pinned open."
Leah looked down at Noah. The baby’s eyes were rolling back into his head. His tiny lips were purple. He had minutes left to live.
She looked at Victoria.
Then, Leah slowly stood up from the bed, holding the bundled baby in her arms. She walked toward the monstrous matriarch, her head bowed, her shoulders shaking as if in total, broken surrender.
"Please," Leah sobbed, extending the blanket-wrapped bundle toward Victoria’s outstretched, skeletal hands. "Please... just save him."
Victoria smiled—a grotesque, triumphal grin of absolute vanity. She lowered the pistol slightly, reaching out with both hands to seize the prize she had hunted across three states.
"Good girl," Victoria purred.
As Victoria’s fingers closed around the blanket, Leah’s gaze snapped up. Her eyes weren't crying. They were burning with feral, merciless hatred.
"Die in hell, mother."
Leah didn't hand over a baby.

She ripped the wool blanket away, revealing the six-inch surgical scalpel she had hidden beneath Noah’s clothes—the scalpel left behind by the body double.
With a primal, guttural scream that shook the burning rafters, Leah drove the heavy surgical blade straight up into Victoria Miller’s throat.
