Chapter 18 - The Exhumed Truth: What She Injected into Julian’s Veins

The deafening gunshots tore through the ceiling. The body double collapsed in a heap of white fur and blood across the carved floorboards, her cane clattering against the wall.
Downstairs, the gunfire ceased.
A heavy, dragging silence filled the house, punctuated only by the crackle of burning drywall where a stray tracer round had ignited the kitchen curtains.
"Leah!" David’s voice roared from the bottom of the stairs. "Leah, answer me!"
"I'm here!" Leah yelled down through the attic hatch, her voice raw and shaking. "David! The woman in the fur coat wasn't her! It was a double! Victoria isn't in the house!"
David sprinted up the stairs, covered in soot and blood, his tactical jacket shredded. He reached up, grasped Leah by the waist, and lowered her and Noah down from the attic crawlspace into the smoked-filled bedroom.
Noah was barely breathing now. His tiny chest was pulling in hard against his ribcage with every ragged gasp.
"We have to get the antidote from Vance’s bag," Leah cried, dropping to her knees beside the baby.
"I told you, it’s poison—"
"No, David, look at the body double's neck!" Leah pointed to the dead woman lying on the floor. Spilling from her open leather shoulder bag was a file marked *RESTRICTED: BIO-GENETIC RESEARCH / PROJECT OMEGA.*
David ripped the folder open with bloodstained hands.
Inside were medical intake forms, genetic sequencing charts, and high-resolution autopsies dated twenty-six years ago from the private Miller Pharmaceutical laboratory in Switzerland.
David skimmed the pages, his eyes darting across the clinical terms, until he hit the summary sheet. His knees buckled, and he dropped heavily onto the edge of the bed.
"Julian didn't die of leukemia," David whispered, his voice trembling with an existential horror deeper than anything they had faced tonight.
"What did she do to him?" Leah pleaded, wrapping a blanket around Noah’s shivering body.
"Julian was born with a rare genetic immunodeficiency," David read, tears cutting clean lines through the soot on his cheeks. "Victoria refused to let the Miller heir be seen as defective. She used an experimental gene-editing viral vector she synthesized in her own labs. She injected Julian with it herself."
David looked up at Leah, his face completely hollowed out by grief.
"It cured the immunodeficiency, Leah. But it altered Julian’s cellular marrow. It created an entirely unique synthetic enzyme that stops human cellular degradation. Victoria didn't want an heir... she wanted a biological fountain of youth. She extracted Julian’s bone marrow until his heart gave out from septic shock."
Leah stared at him, horror choking the air from her lungs. "And Noah?"

David turned to the final page of the dossier, where Noah’s newborn screening panel from the hospital was clipped. A giant red stamp covered the page: *100% PHENOTYPIC MATCH TO SUBJECT JULIAN.*
"She doesn't want to raise Noah," David choked out, a cold sob tearing from his chest. "She’s dying of stage-four pancreatic cancer in that prison wing. She needs Noah’s marrow. She bred us like cattle to recreate Julian’s DNA."
