Chapter 14 - The Eighty-Million-Dollar Trap: We Bought Land Inside Her Cage

"What does she mean, she brought Julian back?" Leah’s voice was high, frantic, bordering on hysteria as she backed against the headboard of the bed. "Julian died when he was six years old! David, you identified the exhumed body in Massachusetts! His bones were in the medical lab!"

David smashed the metronome against the cast-iron radiator, crushing the brass gears into twisted junk. The ticking died instantly, replaced only by the roar of the gale outside.

"She’s playing psychological warfare," David spat, pacing the floorboards like a caged predator. "She wants us sleep-deprived. She wants us hallucinating. She wants me to abandon you and Noah to go chasing shadows in the woods so she can walk in through the back!"

"David, look out the window!"

David spun around.

Down the long, winding coastal access road, past the dense stands of pitch pine, a convoy of headlights was emerging through the trees. Not police sirens. No flashing blue or red emergency strobes. Just cold, blinding, halogen white beams cutting through the torrential rain.

One. Two. Three. Four heavy utility trucks.

The vehicles pulled off the highway and systematically parked across the only dirt road leading out to the peninsula, their massive steel bull-bars forming an impassable barricade. Heavy diesel engines idled in the dark, thrumming like distant thunder.

David tore his satellite phone from his tactical vest and dialed the corporate attorney who had managed the court-ordered liquidation of the Miller estate.

"Marcus!" David screamed over the static. "Who bought the parcels surrounding my coastal plot?! You told me this entire headland was state conservancy land!"

There was a long, suffocating pause on the other end of the line. Paper shuffled frantically. When Marcus spoke, his voice was shaking so hard his teeth clicked.

"David... oh God, David, listen to me," Marcus breathed. "The liquidation was approved by the bankruptcy court. But three days ago, a shell holding company out of the Cayman Islands called *Saint Jude Heritage Holdings* filed an emergency cash buyout for the ninety acres of forest and private shoreline encompassing your property. The court trustee signed off on it because the cash offer was double market value."

"Who owns Saint Jude?!" David roared.

"The primary beneficiary listed on the corporate charter..." Marcus hesitated, his breath catching in his throat. "...is Noah Julian Miller. With full executive guardianship vested in his paternal grandmother, Victoria Miller."

David dropped the satellite phone. It hit the hardwood floor, the plastic casing cracking open.

"She didn't track us here," David whispered, his eyes wide with a horrifying, sickening realization. "She didn't find our sanctuary, Leah."

Leah looked at him, the chill of true damnation settling into her marrow. "What are you saying?"

"She *bought* this sanctuary for us," David said, his voice a dead monotone. "The real estate agent who showed you this cottage... the cheap price... the quick closing... it was all her. She put us here on purpose. We ran straight into a cage she built three months ago."
