Chapter 8 - The Viper’s Nest

I lunged toward the pinned Maybach. Two federal agents were already using a hydraulic halligan bar to peel open the crumpled passenger door.

Inside, Beatrice Vance was fighting like a rabid animal.

Her platinum hair was torn from its pins, her diamond earrings ripped out, her mink coat smeared with motor oil and shattered glass. "Do not touch me!" she shrieked at the FBI tactical operators. "I know the Attorney General! I have dinner with the Governor twice a month! You are trespassing on private corporate property! I will have your badges by morning!"

"Shut up," I said, reaching through the shattered window, grabbing the silk collar of her blouse, and dragging her face toward the jagged frame.

Beatrice froze. The venom in her eyes flickered with a sudden, sharp shock of fear as she looked into my face. She had spent a year treating me like an uneducated, dispensable vessel. Now she was staring into the eyes of a mother whose child she had tried to butcher.

"Where is the antigen, Beatrice?" I snarled, my fingers twisting tighter into her collar, choking her against the door frame. "Tell me where it is, or I swear to God I will drag you through this broken window by your hair and let these agents watch me tear your throat out."

"It’s... it’s in the console," Beatrice choked out, her aristocratic voice finally cracking under the weight of my fury. "The refrigerated compartment between the rear seats. The code is 0-4-1-2. Leo’s birthday. The code is his birthday!"

I shoved her back into the limousine with a force that banged her skull against the leather headrest.

Dad reached past her, punched the four-digit code into the brushed-steel digital keypad between the seats, and the refrigerated vault popped open with a soft hiss of pneumatic pressure.

Inside sat a padded, temperature-controlled rack holding three glass ampoules filled with an electric-blue, luminescent liquid.

*Chimera Vector Receptor-Antagonist: Phase-Neutralizer.*

Marcus snatched one of the ampoules, checking the seal with practiced speed. "This is it. This is the custom antibody bind. It’s formulated to scavenge the synthetic lipid nanoparticles and flush them through the renal system."

"Do it now!" I cried.

A tactical field surgeon from the HRT medical unit was already beside Marcus. Together, they drew the electric-blue serum into a syringe. Marcus knelt on the wet pavement beside the Volvo, gently holding Leo’s arm.

Leo whimpered weakly as the needle slid into his tiny deltoid muscle. The blue liquid emptied smoothly from the barrel.

Within sixty seconds, the terrifying, greyish pallor in Leo’s cheeks began to fade. The furious purple swelling around the puncture mark on his neck visibly softened, the inflammation receding as the neutralizing antibodies flooded his bloodstream, hunting down and destroying the synthetic vectors before they could penetrate his bone marrow.

Leo opened his eyes.

They weren't glazed anymore. They were clear, dark brown, and looking directly into mine.

"Mama," he whispered, a tiny, raspy syllable that cut through the thunder of the rain, the helicopters, and the sirens.

I pulled him into my arms, burying my face against his neck, sobbing with a ferocity that shook my entire body. He was back. My baby was back.

Beside us, the federal agents dragged Beatrice Vance out of the crumpled wreckage of the Maybach. Her pristine white pants were soaked in mud, her face streaked with mascara and rain. As they forced her into the back of an armored transport van, she looked back at me, her mouth twisting into a final, venomous sneer.

"You haven't saved him, Mariana!" she screamed into the wind. "Aegis will never stop! The investors will come for him! That genetic sequence belongs to them!"

"No, Beatrice," Arthur Delgado said, stepping between her and my son, flashing his gold retired shield beneath the searchlight. "The only thing Aegis is going to get is a federal racketeering indictment, a multi-agency seizure of their offshore assets, and thirty years in ADX Florence for every single board member who signed that contract."

The van doors slammed shut, cutting off her screams forever.
