Chapter 3 - The Ghost Account

"Take it out," I demanded. My voice was no longer shaking. The weeping mother had vanished, replaced by an animalistic fury that dried every tear on my face. "Marcus. Take a scalpel and cut that thing out of my baby’s neck right now."
"I can't," Marcus said, backing away from the table with his hands raised. "Mariana, listen to me. The cannula is seated less than two millimeters from his internal jugular vein. The casing is made of brittle, bio-reactive ceramic. If I try to excise it in a field setting without fluoroscopic imaging and microsurgical suction, and that casing cracks? The entire remaining payload will dump directly into his central circulation. It will induce fatal neurogenic shock."
"Then what do we do?!" I screamed, turning on my father. "We can't take him to a hospital, we can't cut it out, and in six hours his body is going to poison itself!"
Dad had already walked over to a heavy steel desk in the corner. He opened an encrypted Toughbook laptop, plugging a high-gain satellite modem into the side port. His fingers flew across the keyboard with the clinical efficiency of an investigator who had run undercover task forces for decades.
"We find the deactivation code," Dad said without looking up. "These bio-capsules are built with failsafes. The researchers have to be able to abort the trial if the host exhibits acute rejection. There is an external command frequency that neutralizes the release mechanism."
"Where is it stored?" I asked, rushing to his side, staring at the lines of green code scrolling down the black screen.
"On Vance-Kovac’s secure private server," Dad replied. "Or on Ryan’s local encrypted drive. But to crack that server, we need his private cryptographic key. And to find where he’s keeping that key, we follow the money."
Dad dragged an external hard drive from his pocket and slotted it into the USB port. "Three weeks ago, an old friend in FinCEN—the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network—flagged an offshore transaction coming out of Vance-Kovac’s R&D escrow account. I didn't want to bring it to you until I had proof, Mariana. I wanted to believe Ryan was just a stupid, weak boy controlled by an overbearing mother. I didn't want to believe he was a monster."
"Show me," I said, my voice ice.
A document materialized on the screen. It was a wire transfer confirmation slip from a private banking institution in Zurich, routed through an LLC registered in the Cayman Islands under the name *Aegis Bio-Holdings*.
The transfer amount was $1,750,000.
The beneficiary account was held under a personal trust: *The Vance Family Dynasty Trust*. The authorized signatory was Beatrice Vance, with Ryan Vance listed as the secondary executive.
"One point seven million dollars," I muttered. "For what? Who sent this?"
"Look at the originating entity," Dad pointed to the header. "Aegis Bio-Holdings isn't an investment fund. It’s a front company for a private consortium of European and Middle Eastern private equity brokers who specialize in black-market biomedical acquisitions. They finance clinical trials that bypass the Nuremberg Code and the Helsinki Declaration. They buy results that Western regulatory bodies would throw scientists in federal prison for even attempting."
Dad clicked to the next page. It was an annex to the transfer agreement, marked *STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL // LEVEL-4 CLEARANCE ONLY*.
My eyes scanned the scanned document until they locked onto a single, typed paragraph that made the floor feel like it was dropping out from under me:
> *Project Chimera-1: Target Subject: Male Infant, 12 months. Lineage: Vance/Delgado. Subject demonstrates optimal genetic heterozygous profile for receptor-mediated vector integration. Final milestone disbursement of $8,250,000 payable upon extraction of viable bone marrow harvest following successful 48-hour in vivo stabilization.*
*Extraction.*
*Harvest.*
They hadn't just used Leo as a lab rat. They had sold him.
They had entered into a multi-million-dollar contract to turn my son’s living body into an organic bioreactor, incubate an unapproved genetic therapy inside his blood, and then extract his bone marrow to deliver the proprietary cellular yield to foreign buyers.
"They were never going to let him grow up," I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "That’s why Beatrice took over his medical records. That’s why she insisted on choosing his pediatrician. Dr. Sterling. Dr. Sterling wasn't a doctor... he was on their payroll."
"Dr. Robert Sterling was Vance-Kovac’s former chief medical officer," Dad confirmed, his voice vibrating with suppressed violence. "He lost his surgical license in New York six years ago for falsifying pediatric trial data. Beatrice bought him a clean practice in Beverly Hills."
Suddenly, the Toughbook emitted a dull chime.
Dad leaned in closer, squinting at the screen. A new data stream was populating an automated network trace.
"Someone just pinged the local cell tower nearest to this industrial park," Dad said, his posture instantly locking into combat mode.
"How?" Marcus asked, reaching down to unholster a Glock 17 from his duty belt. "I thought you swept the Suburban."
"They didn't track the truck," Dad said, slowly turning his head toward the stainless steel table where Leo’s cashmere sweater lay discarded in a crumpled heap.
He walked over, picked up the sweater, and pulled a tactical folding knife from his pocket. With a swift flick of the blade, he sliced through the thick, embroidered emblem on the chest—a custom gold monogram of Leo’s initials.
Inside the double-stitched lining of the patch sat a wafer-thin, flexible silver strip.
A high-frequency passive beacon.
"Beatrice gave him this sweater this morning," I gasped, the room spinning around me. "She wouldn't let me dress him in the outfit I bought. She insisted he wear *her* gift."
May you like
"They’ve known our general vicinity since we left the hotel," Dad said, tossing the tracker onto the concrete floor and crushing it beneath his heavy boot heel until the silicon shattered into dust. "Pack the gear. Now. We have less than ten minutes before their private security team arrives."
