Chapter 7 - Baiting the Golden Boy

Ryan stared at the glowing screen of the burner phone, his brow furrowing as his brain desperately tried to process what he was looking at.
"What is that?" Ryan stammered, pointing a shaking finger. "Who are you talking to?"
"You confessed to everything, Ryan," I said, stepping back toward the Volvo, my voice ringing clear and steady above the roar of the rain. "The offshore wire transfers. The Aegis contract. The illegal human experimentation on an infant. The deliberate poisoning. And Beatrice just confessed to ordering the murder of a retired LAPD detective and threatening the execution of Marcus’s children."
"Hang that up!" Beatrice shrieked from the Maybach, her aristocratic composure instantly evaporating into raw, hysterical panic. "Ryan, take the phone! Take the child! Kill that paramedic!"
Before Ryan could move, the night sky above the industrial corridor turned from pitch-black to blinding, daylight white.
*WHUM-WHUM-WHUM-WHUM.*
Two massive Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawks dropped out of the low-hanging cloud cover, hovering barely fifty feet above the alleyway, the downwash from their massive rotor blades turning the falling rain into a violent, blinding hurricane. High-intensity searchlights pinned the Maybach and the two Escalades in intersecting beams of crushing white light.
Over the deafening roar of the turbines, an amplified voice boomed from the lead helicopter:
*"FEDERAL AGENTS! THIS IS THE FBI HOSTAGE RESCUE TEAM! WEAPONS ON THE GROUND! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND GET ON YOUR KNEES NOW!"*
The two armed guards behind Ryan didn't even attempt to raise their weapons. They instantly dropped their carbines onto the wet asphalt, interlocking their fingers behind their heads, and threw themselves flat into the muddy water.
Ryan stood paralyzed, the torrential downwash whipping his wet hair across his face, his thousand-dollar suit plastered against his shaking frame. "No... no, no, no... this is a misunderstanding! I’m Ryan Vance! I’m the CEO of Vance-Kovac!"
"Ryan, get in the car!" Beatrice screamed, pounding her fists against the tinted glass of the limousine. "Drive! Driver, run them over!"
The Maybach’s driver slammed the transmission into reverse, but an unmarked, armored BearCat tactical vehicle smashed directly into the limousine's rear bumper with the force of an artillery shell, crumpling the trunk and spinning the luxury sedan ninety degrees, pinning it helplessly against the concrete wall of the laundromat.
From the shadows of the alleyway, two dozen tactical operators in full multi-cam armor, carrying suppressed short-barreled rifles, swept into the perimeter with terrifying speed.
And walking calmly behind the point team, wearing a blood-soaked ballistic vest, a heavy bandage wrapped around his left forearm, and carrying his old service 1911 in a tactical holster, was Arthur Delgado.
My knees gave out. A sob of sheer, undiluted relief tore from my chest.
"Dad!"
Dad didn't run to me; he was a cop on a hot scene. He kept his eyes locked on Ryan Vance, his weapon drawn, moving with the cold, measured cadence of an apex predator.
"Step away from my daughter, Vance," Dad said, his voice cutting through the roar of the helicopters like an axe.
Ryan turned around, seeing my father alive, seeing the federal tactical team swarming the perimeter, seeing the BearCat crushing his mother’s limousine. His face collapsed into pathetic, blubbering terror. He dropped to his knees in the puddle, his hands raised in surrender.
"Arthur! Arthur, please! She made me do it!" Ryan sobbed, pointing hysterically at the pinned Maybach. "It was Beatrice! She set up the Aegis account! She brought in Dr. Sterling! She told me if Vance-Kovac went under, the board would strip my equity! She said Leo wouldn't feel a thing! Arthur, I swear to God, I loved him! I love my son!"
Dad stepped directly in front of Ryan. He didn't yell. He didn't hit him. He simply looked down at him with a disgust so absolute it was worse than any bullet.
"You’re not a father, Ryan," Dad said softly. "You’re a parasite in an expensive suit."
Dad kicked Ryan’s hands out from under him, sending his face crashing down into the cold, oily puddle, planting his heavy combat boot squarely between Ryan’s shoulder blades. A federal agent immediately dropped onto Ryan’s back, wrenching his arms behind him and securing his wrists with heavy-duty zip-ties.

"Mariana!" Marcus shouted, running toward me with a fresh emergency kit. "The antigen! Where is the neutralization antigen?!"
