Chapter 24 - The Collapse of the Vault

Daniel didn't throw the key at her feet. He hurled it with all his strength backward—up into the narrow, dark cavity of the floor joists above the doorway, where it wedged deep into the wiring harness of the house’s master circuit breaker.
Vanessa’s composure fractured instantly into primal fury. “You idiot!”
She raised the revolver, but Rachel was faster. Fuelled by months of agonizing isolation, Rachel charged forward, tackling Vanessa around the waist before the trigger could be pulled.
The gun discharged with a deafening roar, the bullet ricocheting off the concrete walls and embedding itself in the ceiling. Both women crashed to the hard floor, rolling toward the edge of the open steel hatch.
“Rachel!” Daniel threw himself down the stairs.
Vanessa fought with feral savagery, clawing at Rachel’s eyes, but Rachel had spent nearly a year fighting the cold, the dark, and despair; she was no longer the soft, hesitant woman Vanessa had ambushed. Rachel grabbed a heavy iron wrench lying beside the generator and struck Vanessa across the forearm.
The revolver clattered away, tumbling down the open hatch into the dark abyss below.
Daniel grabbed Vanessa from behind, locking his arms around her neck and pinning her against the floor. “It’s over!” he roared. “It’s over, Vanessa!”
Vanessa gasped for breath, her face flushed red against the concrete, but suddenly she stopped struggling. A horrible, wet chuckle escaped her lips.
“You... you think... you’re the first one to find this room?” she hissed, spitting blood onto the floor.
From the depths of the open hatch below, a low, mechanical hum began to vibrate through the concrete foundation. The smell of burning ozone and electrical discharge filled the air.
“What is that?” Rachel breathed, backing away from the pit.

Vanessa laughed louder, the sound echoing off the walls like madness itself. “The magnetic key wasn't the lock, Daniel... it was the failsafe! When you jammed it into the main circuit, you activated the purge protocol. My grandfather didn't build a vault... he built an incinerator for his secrets!”
