Chapter 19 - The Second Brass Key

Dawn broke over the city in muted shades of gray. Daniel stood in the center of Rachel’s living room, watching his daughter sleep on the sofa beneath a fleece blanket. Lily looked impossibly fragile, her small chest rising and falling to a rhythm untouched by the adult treachery that surrounded her.
On the coffee table rested the stuffed teddy bear Daniel had brought over the night before.
“She wouldn’t let it out of her sight after you left,” Rachel murmured, stepping out of the small kitchen with two mugs of black coffee. She handed one to Daniel, her fingers brushing his. The warmth was fleeting, but it anchored him.
“Rachel,” Daniel began, his throat dry. “I’m sorry. Every time I think we’ve reached the bottom of this pit, another layer caves in.”
“It’s not your fault you didn’t see it,” she replied softly, though a flicker of old resentment still lingered in the corners of her mouth. “Vanessa played us both. She played our pride, our miscommunication, our doubts. But we need to check the bear again.”
Daniel frowned. “The bear? We already found the first brass key inside the ear. That’s how we opened the storage room.”
Rachel set her mug down without drinking. She picked up the worn plush animal, turning it over in her slender hands. “Do you remember the rhyme Lily sang when she was trying to tell you where I was? Before Vanessa hit her?”
Daniel’s blood ran cold. The memories of that horrific evening surged back: *“One key for the closet, one key for the floor, one key for the secret behind Mommy’s door.”*
He snatched the bear. His fingers traced the seams along the spine, pressing into the synthetic stuffing. Deep inside the belly, wrapped in thick cotton batting, was a second hard, cylindrical shape.
Daniel drew a pocketknife from his jeans and sliced cleanly through the coarse stitching.
Tumbling onto the wooden table with a sharp clink was a second key. But unlike the first brass key, which was tarnished and old-fashioned, this one was modern, heavy, and tipped with a magnetic chip.
Engraved along the spine was a set of coordinates, followed by three stamped letters:
