Chapter 18 - Blood Under the Wallpaper

The local police precinct smelled of stale coffee and damp wool. Detective Martinez, a veteran with graying temples and bags under his eyes deep enough to carry luggage, leaned over the metal table where the contents of the manila envelope were laid out.
“Vanessa’s family trust,” Martinez muttered, tapping a yellowed legal document. “Her grandfather bought the old property back in eighty-four. Before the subdivision was built. Before your father bought the land to build your family home, Daniel.”
“What does that have to do with locking Rachel away?” Daniel demanded, pacing the narrow interrogation room. Rachel sat quietly in the corner, clutching a paper cup of lukewarm water, her knuckles bloodless. Lily was sleeping on a cot in the family services lounge down the hall.
“Look at the annex map,” Martinez said, turning the parchment toward him. “The foundation of your old house didn’t just overlap with the abandoned cellar. It was constructed deliberately over a sealed fallout shelter built during the Cold War. Vanessa didn’t just stumble into building a hidden storage room. She didn’t build the room at all. She merely found the pre-existing vault and opened the doorway from inside your master bedroom.”
Rachel’s voice cut through the room like shattered glass. “She knew it was there before she even met Daniel.”
Daniel stopped dead. The room spun. “What?”
“Think about it, Daniel,” Rachel whispered, her eyes hollow with ten months of resurrected trauma. “She applied for the interior design contract for our home renovation three years ago. Before you and I even hit our rough patch. Before we separated. She didn't target you because she loved you. She targeted this family because she needed the house.”
“Why?” Daniel choked out. “What could possibly be under that foundation worth destroying our lives for?”
Martinez slid another sheet of paper across the metal surface. It was a recent bank manifest, filed under a dummy corporation in Panama. The signature at the bottom was not Vanessa’s. It belonged to Cole’s estranged father—a real estate developer who had vanished seven years ago after a federal indictment for securities fraud.

“Cole wasn’t Vanessa’s side piece,” Martinez said grimly. “He was the landlord’s son. And they didn’t lock Rachel in that room just to isolate her from Lily. They used that cellar to store what Cole’s father left behind before he ran.”
