Chapter 5 - The Dismantling

Forty-eight hours later.

The cleanup was swift, clinical, and relentless.

With Victor Croft’s full confession and the recovery of the cryptographic seed phrase, the forty-five million dollars stolen from the Ashford Foundation was fully restored to our corporate accounts within twenty-four hours.

Richard Vance and three senior associates at Vance & Associates were arrested at their Wall Street offices in full view of the national press, charged with racketeering, forgery, and professional misconduct. Their law licenses were permanently revoked, and their firm collapsed overnight.

Inside the Manhattan Detention Complex, Celeste Vaughn stood behind the heavy glass partition of the attorney-client visiting room.

She wore a dingy gray prison jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her flawless makeup gone, revealing the tired, desperate lines around her eyes and mouth.

I sat on the other side of the glass, wearing a crisp charcoal suit, my hands folded calmly on the counter.

"Evelyn... please," Celeste sobbed into the plastic telephone receiver, her voice crackling through the small speaker. "You have to tell the prosecutor to reduce the charges! I didn't want to hurt your father! Victor forced me! He threatened to kill me if I didn't get the money!"

I picked up the phone slowly, listening to her performance with absolute detachment.

"You're still playing the victim, Celeste," I said softly into the receiver. "Even now, in an orange jumpsuit, you can't stop lying."

"It's the truth!" she cried, pressing her manicured hand—now missing its three-carat diamond ring—against the reinforced glass. "I loved Jonathan! I really did! I wanted a real life with him! Please, Evelyn... ask him to come see me! Just five minutes! Let me explain to him!"

"My father is currently on a private jet to our island estate in Maine," I said coldly. "He never wants to hear your name again. And he will certainly never set foot in this building."

Celeste’s eyes flared with sudden, poisonous rage. The frantic, weeping victim vanished instantly, replaced by the bitter, snarling predator underneath.

"You think you're so smart, don't you?!" she spat through the phone, her face pressed close to the glass. "You think you're a hero?! You're just a cold, miserable bitch who couldn't stand seeing her father give his love to another woman!"

"I am the woman who saved my father's life from a murderer," I replied quietly. "And yesterday morning, the State's Attorney finalized your plea agreement. You will be pleading guilty to attempted murder in the first degree, grand larceny, and criminal enterprise."

Celeste froze. "What... what is the sentence?"

"Thirty-five years without the possibility of parole," I said, setting the receiver down on the cradle.

I stood up, adjusting my jacket, looking down at her through the glass. "Enjoy your new estate, Celeste. It’s significantly smaller than ours."

I turned and walked down the long, concrete corridor, leaving her screaming obscenities behind the heavy steel doors until the echo died away completely.
