Chapter 3 - The Web Unravels

By noon the following day, the financial storm hit the news networks.

While Celeste sat in a cold holding cell at the NYPD 19th Precinct under suicide watch and zero bail, my legal team was already executing a massive financial counter-strike against her accomplices.

A woman like Celeste didn't operate in a vacuum. To move tens of millions of dollars out of high-security accounts, alter estate plans, and silence household staff, she needed an infrastructure of corrupt professionals.

I sat in the executive boardroom of the Ashford Group on the fifty-fourth floor of Manhattan’s Financial District. Across the long glass table sat Arthur Vance—my father’s original, loyal attorney whom I had secretly rehired three weeks ago—along with three forensic investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"Evelyn," Arthur said, sliding a thick blue folder across the table. "We just finished tracking the offshore routing paths Celeste used to bleed the Ashford Foundation."

"Who signed off on the internal compliance checks?" I asked, my pen hovering over my notepad.

"Richard Vance," Arthur said, his jaw tightening. "No relation to me, thank God. He's the senior partner at Vance & Associates—the firm Celeste forced your father to hire three months ago."

"How much did they take?"

"Through fraudulent wire authorizations bearing your father's forged electronic signature, Richard Vance transferred forty-five million dollars into a series of shell companies registered in the Cook Islands," Arthur reported. "And guess who holds the power of attorney for those shell companies?"

"Celeste's mother," I guessed.

"Close," Arthur smiled grimly. "Her secret husband."

I stopped writing. I looked up slowly. "Her what?"

"Clara Vance—alias Celeste Vaughn—never legally divorced her second partner in London," Arthur revealed, pulling out a marriage certificate from the UK General Register Office dated four years ago. "His name is Victor Croft. He's a disgraced former pharmaceutical chemist who was struck off the medical register in England for illegally manufacturing synthetic toxins."

The missing piece of the puzzle snapped into place with terrifying clarity.

Celeste wasn't just a fortune hunter acting on impulse. She was the forward operative for an organized, highly sophisticated criminal syndicate that specialized in targeting wealthy, isolated widowers, poisoning them with undetectable custom compounds, and draining their estates through fraudulent legal structures.

"Where is Victor Croft now?" I asked, my voice cold and hard.

"He checked into the Ritz-Carlton in Boston three days ago under a fake Canadian passport," Arthur answered. "He’s waiting for Celeste to wire the final twenty million dollars from your father's estate so they can board a private flight to South America."

I stood up, closing my notebook, buttoning my navy blazer.

"Tell the FBI to hold off on arresting Croft at the hotel," I said.

Arthur looked surprised. "Why? He’s flight risk, Evelyn!"

"Because," I said, a dark smile touching my lips, "Victor Croft thinks Celeste is still in control. He doesn't know she was caught last night. And I'm going to use Celeste's own phone to invite him to a private meeting right here in New York."
