Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Predator

By two o'clock in the morning, the ballroom was empty of guests, but the Ashford Estate was crawling with crime scene technicians, federal investigators, and medical personnel.

The toxicology team had already performed an initial field reagent test on the cake icing. The clear liquid inside the amber vial—which Detective Laura Vance had recovered from behind a trash bin in the catering kitchen where Celeste had frantically dumped it—was not sweetener.

It was concentrated digitalis extract, a potent cardiac glycoside. In small doses, it caused nausea and dizziness. In a concentrated dose, it induced fatal cardiac arrest within forty-five minutes—a cause of death that, in a sixty-two-year-old man with mild hypertension like my father, would easily be written off as a natural heart attack.

My father sat in his leather armchair in the library, his face buried in his hands. A mug of hot tea sat untouched on the mahogany side table.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the rain slicking the stone driveway.

"I loved her, Evelyn," my father whispered, his voice cracking with a devastation I had never heard before, not even when my mother died five years ago. "I trusted her with everything. How could I have been so blind?"

I walked over to his chair, kneeling beside him and placing my hand gently over his shaking fingers. "Dad, predators like Celeste don't target stupid people. They target grieving, generous people. She studied you. She knew exactly what buttons to push, what words to say, and how to make you feel like you weren't alone anymore."

"How long have you known?" he asked, looking up at me with red, tear-filled eyes.

"I didn't know until tonight," I answered honestly. "But I suspected the moment she convinced you to fire Arthur Vance, your attorney of thirty years, and replace him with her personal asset management firm."

I pulled out my laptop, opening a encrypted folder I had built over the last ninety days.

"Look at this, Dad," I said, turning the screen toward him. "Celeste Vaughn isn't her real name. Her birth name is Clara Vance. Eight years ago, she was an assistant financial advisor in London. She married a wealthy shipping heir named Julian Sterling. Six months after the wedding, Sterling died suddenly of an unexpected heart failure during a private yacht trip in Greece."

My father's breath caught in his throat. "Did... did they investigate?"

"The Greek authorities ruled it natural causes," I explained, scrolling down through court records and bank statements. "She inherited his initial twelve-million-dollar estate. But within three years, she blew through the money supporting a massive illegal gambling debt in Monaco. Three years ago, she surfaced in Miami under the name Celeste Laurent, where she became engaged to a real estate developer named Marcus Kane."

"What happened to Kane?"

"Marcus didn't die," I said grimly. "He caught her attempting to transfer twenty million dollars out of his corporate escrow account three weeks before their wedding. But before he could press charges, he suffered a sudden neurological collapse from an unexplained toxin. He's currently in a permanent care facility in Florida, unable to speak or walk."

My father stared at the screen, his skin turning ash-gray. "She... she was killing me slowly, wasn't she? Long before the cake tonight."

I looked at him, my heart aching. "Dad... when was the last time you had your daily heart medication refilled?"

May you like

My father reached into his vest pocket, pulling out a small brown prescription bottle provided by Celeste’s personal doctor two weeks ago. "Celeste brought me a new batch from her private pharmacy..."

I took the bottle, opening the cap and pouring three white tablets into my palm. "These aren't your blood pressure pills, Dad. These are sugar pills mixed with low-dose arsenic. You haven't been sick from stress the last two months. She's been poisoning your morning coffee every single day."
