Chapter 9 - THE VAULT OF SECRETS

Inside the quiet, heavily fortified walls of the manor, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Gideon found Sage exactly where Owen had left her—sitting cross-legged on the plush carpet of the library, meticulously organizing her colored pencils. She looked up as Gideon walked in, her bright hazel eyes immediately catching the tight, dark expression on his face despite his best efforts to hide it.

"Is it the bad men from the gala again, Gideon?" Sage asked softly, her small hands freezing over the pencils. She had never fully forgotten the elite socialites who had mocked her a year ago.

Gideon felt his heart twist. He walked over and knelt beside her on the rug, ignoring his damp trousers. He reached out and gently tucked a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear.

"No, sweetheart," Gideon said, keeping his voice steady and warm. "Just some confused lawyers who think they can tell us what to do. But you know what I told you about this house, right?"

Sage nodded slowly. "You said the walls are made of iron. And Owen doesn't let monsters inside."

"Exactly," Gideon smiled, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "No monsters allowed. You are safe here. Forever."

Later that night, long after Sage had fallen asleep with her gray suitcase tucked safely beneath her bed, Gideon descended into the basement level of the estate.

Here, behind a biometric steel door, lay the Vance intelligence hub.

Owen Faust and Nora Whitman, Gideon’s ruthless senior corporate counsel, were already waiting at the illuminated glass table. Projected across the digital screens covering the walls was everything the Vance intelligence network had managed to dig up on Julian Thorne in the last eight hours.

"He’s not a phantom, Gideon, but he’s remarkably well-hidden," Nora began, adjusting her glasses. "Julian Thorne is the CEO of Thorne Vanguard, a boutique European hedge fund operating primarily out of Geneva. The family was old money—aristocracy that lost its liquid wealth in the late nineties."

Gideon crossed his arms, his eyes scanning the digital ledgers. "If he’s running a hedge fund in Geneva, why does he suddenly care about a niece in Chicago? Why now?"

"Because of this," Owen interjected, tapping a keyboard to bring up a heavily redacted legal document.

"I breached the European probate courts using our offshore contacts. Three weeks ago, Elise’s estranged grandfather—Julian’s father—passed away in London. He left behind an irrevocable generational trust worth roughly four hundred million dollars. But there’s a bloodline contingency clause."

Nora pointed her pen at the highlighted text on the screen.

"The trust dictates that the inheritance must be split equally among all surviving direct descendants," Nora explained, her voice hardening with disgust. "Julian thought he was the only heir. But the Swiss executors discovered Elise had registered a child’s birth certificate in the United States before she vanished. Julian cannot access the four hundred million dollars until Sage’s legal status is resolved."

Gideon’s blood ran completely cold.

"He doesn't want custody to raise her," Gideon said, the horrifying realization setting in like concrete. "He wants legal guardianship so he can assume control of her half of the inheritance, absorb it into his failing hedge fund, and then discard her in a boarding school in Europe."

"Worse," Owen added grimly. "If he establishes that your adoption was fraudulent, he can sue Vance Holdings for emotional damages and international kidnapping, seeking billions in settlements to save his over-leveraged firm."

Gideon stared at the screen, a terrifying, absolute silence descending over him.

He had spent his life crushing corporate predators. But this was different. This man was using the sacred memory of Elise, and the life of an innocent eight-year-old girl, as a financial bargaining chip.

"Nora," Gideon whispered, his voice vibrating with a predatory, lethal calm. "Draft the emergency injunctions. Delay the federal hearing by any means necessary. Tie his lawyers up in jurisdictional red tape."

He turned to Owen.

"Owen. I want you to pull every financial record, every offshore wire transfer, and every dirty secret Julian Thorne has ever tried to bury. We aren't just going to win this custody battle. We are going to execute him in the town square."
